Interview with Nico Weiss

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m genuinely proud of all my projects — that’s the truth, and I can’t ignore it. Whether I played almost every role, like in the albums by Café Velorio, or just contributed guitars to a track, or took on full productions where I played multiple instruments and handled mixing and mastering — each project means something to me. If I had to choose just one, it would be “Diario Íntimo de una Adolescente Conflictiva” by Café Velorio. I was responsible for the musical composition, lyrics, artistic production, and performed guitars, bass, synthesizers, and MIDI drums. That album represents a very personal creative statement for me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on my thesis for the Music Production Technician degree at Universidad ORT, which consists of a 4-track EP.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. I prefer it over Analog because i hear it fuller on all the audio spectrum.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I’ll give everything to make sure you’re fully satisfied with your composition.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I love most about my work is… everything — from the moment I listen to and analyze a song, to writing and recording arrangements, mixing and mastering, and even the small tasks like organizing cables, tidying up my studio, and handling admin work.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Technical stuff.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Are you ready?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Join the trip with confidence.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Yamaha Revstar Electric Guitar, BOSS ME25 Digital Pedal, Guitar Amplifier, a Computer and NoteWorthyComposer 2.0.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Since 2017. I'm Nicolás Weiss — a music producer, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist from Uruguay. Since 2019, I’ve been producing, arranging, and performing music across genres with a focus on emotionally honest, textured, and artist-driven sound. I specialize in turning raw ideas and demos into fully produced songs, and I often handle every step of the process: instrumentation, arrangement, recording, mixing, and mastering. I play electric, acoustic, and classical guitar, bass, keys, drums, and percussion, and I’m skilled in writing arrangements for almost any instrument or ensemble. My musical background combines classical studies (especially the works of J.S. Bach), jazz harmony, film scoring, and years of exploration in experimental and alternative styles. I’m currently studying Music Production at Universidad ORT Uruguay and have trained with respected professionals like Mauro de María, Aubrey Whitfield, and Gabriel Barbato. As a producer and session musician, I’ve worked on songs and records for artists such as LSBO, Rulloh, Matías Almada, and LANKI. My studio is acoustically treated and equipped with high-end gear, allowing me to deliver professional quality from composition to master. I’m also the creative force behind Black Johnson Junior, my personal art rock trio project where I write, sing, and perform most of the instrumentation. Alongside that, I continue to compose and produce for my bands Café Velorio and Jonami Trío, both of which reflect my love for bold songwriting, complex arrangements, and sonic storytelling. My goal is always to serve the song — to make it feel alive, intentional, and uniquely yours.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: My musical style blends emotional clarity with experimental textures and pop sensitivity. I work at the intersection of alternative rock, cinematic pop, ambient, and singer-songwriter, creating music that feels honest, atmospheric, and groove-driven.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Arrangement, Mixing and Mastering. Being gratefull gives me almost every time a fresh approach. I never get my ego in the way of what the song asks for itself.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Johann Sebastian Bach. Reasons are obvious.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Sometimes less is more, but only if you’re truly hearing what the song needs. Before adding layers, take time to really feel the track. What is it saying emotionally? What’s missing — and what’s just habit? Instead of piling on instruments, focus on intention: every sound should have a role, every texture a reason. Whether it’s a silence, a groove, or a raw take, let the emotion lead the production — not the other way around.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop, Rock, Latin, Dance Rock, Trap, I usually work on a wide range of styles that blend emotion, groove, and personality. This includes indie rock, alternative pop, experimental, cinematic, urban, and singer-songwriter projects. I love working with artists who want their songs to sound unique, emotionally honest, and sonically rich — whether that means gritty guitars, delicate textures, or bold, unconventional arrangements. My background as a producer and multi-instrumentalist lets me adapt to each artist’s world while adding my own touch of depth and character.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring emotional depth, musical instinct, and the ability to translate a raw idea into a fully realized sound. My multi-instrumentalist background allows me to shape songs with texture, groove, and dynamic flow — always in service of the artist’s vision. Whether I’m producing, arranging, playing guitar or bass, or mixing, I focus on making the song feel alive — with the right energy, structure, and sonic identity. I don’t just “fill in parts” — I aim to make every section count, every sound support the story. I bring creative care, technical precision, and a collaborative spirit to every track I touch.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Every project starts with listening — to your demo, your references, and your vision. Once I understand the vibe you're going for, I build a custom production plan. If you have a rough demo or song idea, I’ll begin by arranging the instrumentation, choosing sounds that enhance your emotion and groove. Then I record real instruments (guitars, bass, keys, drums, etc.) from my treated studio, and layer textures as needed. After the full arrangement is recorded, I move on to editing, mixing, and finally mastering — always with your feedback at key stages. I make sure you’re involved and happy with the direction before delivering the final track, ready for release. Collaboration is key — I treat every project like it’s part of my own catalog.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I work in an acoustically treated studio, designed by a professional architect specialized in acoustic treatment. My setup includes a powerful computer running top industry DAWs and dozens of fully licensed, high-quality plugins. I use a range of instruments including Fender and Yamaha electric and acoustic guitars, a 5-string Ibanez bass, and an M-Audio MIDI controller. For recording, I rely on a UAD Sphere DLX condenser microphone, a classic Shure SM57 dynamic mic, and a Focusrite audio interface, along with various other tools to ensure high-fidelity, professional results.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Rick Rubin for his ability to distill music to its emotional essence and highlight the artist’s identity. Steve Albini for his raw, unfiltered approach to sound and honesty in production. Nigel Godrich for his atmospheric, emotionally rich productions and his balance between organic and electronic textures. Robert Fripp for his structural daring and sonic innovation. Chris Dave for reinventing groove with elegance and unpredictability. Mr. Bungle for their fearless experimentation and form-defying compositions. Morton Feldman for showing how space, silence, and duration can express more than notes alone. The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys (darker phases) for blending indie accessibility with atmosphere and edge. And of course, The Beatles, for their unmatched creativity, melodic brilliance, and evolution as studio innovators — they redefined what a song and a record could be. These artists shape my approach to music: intentional, emotional, textural, and always artist-centered.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I most often take my clients’ song ideas — whether it's a voice memo, a rough demo, or a basic track — and turn them into fully arranged, recorded, and mixed songs, ready for release. This includes building custom arrangements, recording real instruments (guitars, bass, keys, drums), and mixing/mastering the final product. Artists come to me when they want one person who can handle the full production process, add musicality, and elevate their vision with both precision and soul.
