Interview with Dear Pricey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Usher’s “Coming Home” Album on the song “I Am The Party” because I moved to Atlanta Georgia with no intentions on engineering because I had my son. I just wanted a 9-5 job to provide. Troy Taylor called me asking if I could engineer for Jermaine Dupri & that turned into 2 years of work. I’d finish my job & go straight to JD studio. After JD finished working on the song I Am The Party he turned to me & said “This is going to be a big credit for you” he was right. The song I worked on with him is on Usher’s album, which was nominated at the 67th Grammy Awards. I came to GA to take care of my son now I’m waiting for my Grammy certificate to come in the mail. My first major placement is with Jermaine Dupri, Bryan Michael Cox & Usher & that got me my first Grammy Nomination Participation Certificate.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Let’s work.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet. I just signed up.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. Digital is artificial but hey…
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Dedication & reliability.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Turning nothing into something that takes a life of its own.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long you’ve been engineering? I jokingly say “I started last week” because automatically they think I’m a newbie & the session is going to be trash then they leave with the best song they’ve recorded & heard sonically. When they ask for my name that’s when I know they want to continue working with me. Then they find out about my track record & realize I’m not a newbie. I do this because I don’t want status & titles get in the way of the song. And I never liked the way how celebrity clients treated engineers they never worked with. You should give anyone a chance because you never know.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who’s your musical influences? Can you send me a reference? When do you need it by?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust that I have your greatest outcome in mind.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: UAD Apollo, U87, Pro Tools, iMac & KRK’s.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started as an artist who knew how to record myself then started professionally in 2012.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Unconventional
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jay Z because he’s… Jay Z & Muni Long. I worked in directly with her on the Made For Me Mariah Cary remix via Jermaine Dupri but I want to record a song for her. She’s such a dope singer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Drums are the heart beat of a song & the chords is the soul.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rap & R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Tapping into the song ultimate potential.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process depends on the session. If it’s a recording session I like to make the artist comfortable first by giving them their space & allowing them to be their selves creatively & personally. If it’s a remote mixing session I like to get as much information my clients want for the song. Every song I work on I sprinkle something special on it. I can’t tell you what it is, it just happen creatively.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Apollo UAD, Pro Tools & Logic
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Troy Taylor, Jermaine Dupri & Jay Z
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for clients is vocal tracking, mixing & mastering. Additionally vocal producing, production & songwriting.
