Interview with Ignacio Prieto

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I’ve been playing bass for over 15 years, and music has always been a huge part of my life. I started playing in bands when I was young and quickly developed a passion for live performance and session work. Over the years, I’ve worked with artists in a variety of genres, but my focus has been primarily in soul, funk, and pop. As my experience grew, I transitioned into session work, recording bass lines for different projects and collaborating with artists. Now, I’m fully dedicated to music and work professionally as a session bassist, always looking for new projects and creative opportunities.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: My strongest skill is definitely my groove, especially when it comes to funky tracks. I have a deep understanding of what makes a bass line groove and how to lock in with the rhythm section to create that infectious feel. When it comes to other genres, I’m very good at understanding the nuances of each style and delivering a bass line that fits the specific vibe the song needs. Whether it’s soul, pop, jazz, or rap, I adapt my approach to bring out the best in the song.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: What I bring to a song is a strong sense of groove and musicality. I focus on creating bass lines that are not only technically solid but also serve the song’s emotional and rhythmic needs. Whether it’s a funky groove, a soulful feel, or a tight pop line, I work to make sure the bass complements and enhances the overall vibe. I’m also versatile and adaptable, so I bring my creativity and experience to help make every track unique and memorable.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: My typical work process starts with reviewing the client's request thoroughly. I like to understand exactly what they’re looking for, so I can tailor my approach to suit their vision. After that, I’ll spend some time thinking about what would work best for the track—whether it’s a subtle groove or a more prominent bass line. Once I’ve got a few ideas in mind, I’ll record several takes and experiment with different sounds to see what fits best. I always make sure to communicate with the client to ensure the bass line aligns with their needs and enhances the overall feel of the song.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I have a well-equipped home studio that’s perfect for my needs. While I mostly focus on live performance, I’ve invested in quality bass gear to ensure I can deliver great recordings.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: There are so many musicians who inspire me, it's hard to narrow it down! Some of my biggest influences include bass legends like Flea, James Jamerson, Bootsy Collins, Rocco Palladino, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, and Stuart Zender. Each of them has their own unique approach to the bass that I admire and learn from. But my inspiration doesn’t stop with bassists—I’m also inspired by musicians from all fields. The groove and creativity of funk and soul, the innovation of jazz, and even the energy of great vocalists shape how I approach music. I draw influence from all of these amazing artists, and they push me to always explore new ideas and sounds in my own playing.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients involves a wide range of styles, but I primarily work with artists in soul, funk, and pop. These genres are where I feel most at home, and I love creating bass lines that groove and elevate the song. That said, I truly enjoy working across all genres, as each one presents its own unique challenges and creative opportunities. Whether it’s a smooth soul track, a funky groove, or an upbeat pop song, I always approach every project with the same level of passion and dedication.
