Interview with Derrico_777
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of the track "Boom Bap The Fato." It’s almost hitting 10k on Spotify, and it’s a beat I honestly thought I’d never sell. The artist who wrote the lyrics really connected with my vibe and delivered the words in such a powerful way that it got everyone moving. It was amazing to see how our collaboration came together, and I’m proud of how the track turned out. My role was creating the beat, and it’s definitely one of my favorites! I was really surprised because I thought I’d never sell such an unconventional beat. It’s not a generic sound, and the track itself was born authentic. It really proves that stepping outside the box can create something special!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently finalizing a beat tape, putting together some fresh, unique beats to showcase my style. It’s a project I’ve been really focused on, and I’m excited to share it soon!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: ’m new here, so I don’t know anyone yet! But I’m excited to connect with other talented professionals and collaborate. As I get more familiar with the platform, I’ll definitely be able to recommend some great people!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Right now, I mostly work with digital tools, but I’m about to buy an SP404 to explore more analog vibes. I think the analog sound has a unique warmth and character that’s hard to replicate digitally. My professor, a well-known producer in Brazil, uses both analog and digital gear and always recommends to his students to experiment with both to get the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is authenticity. Every beat I create is original and tailored to your unique style. I’m committed to delivering something that truly represents your sound, with no shortcuts or generic production.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everything!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long does it take to create a beat? It usually takes 3 to 5 business days, depending on the complexity of the project. I like to take my time to make sure every detail is right. Can I make changes to the beat after you send it? Yes! I offer up to 2 free revisions to make sure the beat fits your vision perfectly. Additional revisions can be done for an extra fee. Do I own the rights to the beat? You’ll have full commercial rights to use the beat, but I keep 30% of the royalties if the song is released. You’ll need to credit me as “feat. Derrico_777” on streaming platforms.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that making beats is all about pressing a few buttons and using pre-made loops. In reality, it’s a creative process that takes time and effort to craft something unique. It’s about experimenting, choosing the right sounds, and making sure everything flows together. There’s a lot of trial and error behind the scenes before the final product is ready.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What vibe or mood are you going for with this track? Are there any specific instruments or sounds you’d like to feature? Do you have any reference tracks or artists in mind for inspiration?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to be clear about your vision and the vibe you want. Share references, your ideas, and any specific sounds you’re aiming for. The more I understand your direction, the better I can tailor the beat to your style. Communication is key to creating something that truly fits you!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Audio Intercace, Midi Controller, Headphones and a Solar Charger
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been making music since 2021. I started in rock, but once I entered college, I dove into the world of rap and haven’t looked back. Music has been my dream since I was a kid — just like a boy in Brazil dreams of being a soccer player, I always wanted to be a musician.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as a mix of nostalgic 90s vibes with modern influences, where I always look to push my creativity. I love experimenting with samples, often getting lost in old, obscure music no one knows, searching for that perfect idea. I enjoy the process of inventing something new, constantly tweaking sounds until they go from rough to smooth. It’s about finding the beauty in imperfections and creating something unique that stands out.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with SonoTWS because he's my number one reference for beatmaking in Brazil. His creativity, unique sound, and approach to production really inspire me, and I’d love to bring our styles together.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A tip I always follow is to start with a solid drum and bass foundation. Once you have that, make sure to choose your sounds wisely — don’t overcrowd the mix. Select unique, fitting timbres that complement each other and leave space for everything to breathe.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on hip-hop, boom bap, lo-fi, and trap. I love blending soulful elements with modern sounds to create something fresh yet nostalgic.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is creativity. When making a beat, I focus on making it unique and far from generic. What sets me apart from other beatmakers is that I genuinely enjoy the process — it’s like playing a game, I have fun with it!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a nostalgic 90s vibe with smooth, soulful beats and a laid-back yet energetic feel. I focus on capturing the artist's essence while adding a polished, professional touch to every track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding the artist's vision and style. Then, I either create custom samples or use virtual instruments to build the beat. Afterward, I fine-tune the mix and master to give it a professional sound. Communication is key throughout to ensure it matches the artist's vibe.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a home studio with a focus on flexibility and quality. My setup includes a DAW (FL Studio), MIDI controller, high-quality headphones, and a range of virtual instruments. I also have a mic for vocal recordings when needed.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by producers like J Dilla, Madlib, Metro Boomin, and Alchemist — their creativity, textures, and unique approaches push me to keep evolving my sound and exploring new ideas.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I create custom beats based on each artist’s vibe. Sometimes I craft my own samples or use virtual instruments to build unique sounds. I also handle mixing and mastering for a pro finish.
