Endorse GEM Recording GroupEric and GEM are a pleasure to work with. Beyond skillful production (which goes without saying) Eric has a keen sense of collaboration, working to bring out the best in each project, and also willing to listen and adapt to make each song better than the last.
I produced a 4 song project with GEM with an out of town client-very cool vibe allowed us to track drums, elec gtr, keys, bass + scratch vox in the same room: just like the Good Old Days!! Budget friendly, excellent mixes and a great bunch of folks to be around!
Interview with GEM Recording Group
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A remix record from a hush hush artist in a completely different genre! Quite fascinating.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog soul with digital conveniences. If i had a completely analog studio, I would need 3 times the space. We love them both for they are.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That it doesn't feel like work.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much do you charge? It depends on the project, number of tracks and revisions. What is your favorite microphone? The one that is closest, but I have expensive, shiny ones too, if you really need those.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Drop down menu's and presets won't save your mix. They will help, but there is a lot more to it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who are you favorite artists? What are your favorite songs? What can I take from those? How can I best use what I know to create the mix that you hear? If you don't want too sound like any of that, it is a broader conversation we would love to explore.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The country music genre has been around a very long time. We pay honor and respect to it and love new challenges. Chances are, if you've written a song anything like this, you were inspired by your favorite artist who was in the studio with producers and engineers that inspire us.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A piece of flint, a piece of steel, sharp knife, handsaw and a thousand foot spool of rope.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Musician first, frustrated musician second. "Sound guy" out of desperation. Deep dive out of love. Analog to digital conversions, both live and in studio. Engineer for twenty plus years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Radio ready with impact
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anyone in a hyper creative space with the time to explore and discover.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It is all about the song - serve the song
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: 1990s to modern country.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Hyper attention to detail and use of saturation and compression.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: * Comprehensive knowledge of tones and their origination * Attention to detail and space * Radio-ready mix with impact
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Universal Audio ecosystem - LUNA DAW Download files, clean up any missed cross-fades and edits. As for the mix, very old school approach: build the rhythm section, put the solo's on top, then walk in the lead vocal like the CEO to a boardroom.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Hybrid analog and digital studio Sixteen Focusrite ISA preamps Neve, SSL, API, Helios emulations Plug-ins, plug-ins, plug-ins Universal Audio LUNA and Logic Pro DAWs Full Band Recording Studio
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Vance Powell, Dan Huff, Dave Cobb
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
