Interview with Sungmin
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of my favorite projects is an interactive artwork titled "The Value of Togetherness." It featured a large wooden installation where two people could hold touch-sensitive handles to trigger lights and sound. I designed the full sound system using Max/MSP, created the generative audio content, and built the physical interaction with Arduino and LED cubes. It was rewarding to see people emotionally connecting through sound and light.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on an interactive sound installation for a July 2025 exhibition in Seoul. The piece combines physical touch sensors, LED light visuals, and generative music using Arduino, Max/MSP, and a custom-built audio engine. I’m also producing emotional synth-based tracks for artists and teaching electronic music composition.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m still exploring the SoundBetter community, but I look forward to discovering and collaborating with amazing talents here. Let’s connect!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital – because it gives me unlimited flexibility and creative power. But I love using analog-style plugins and saturation to bring warmth and character. It’s about blending both worlds for the best of both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to listen carefully, work with intention, and treat your music like it’s my own. I don’t just deliver files – I deliver care, creativity, and a sound that reflects your story.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating something from nothing – watching a simple idea turn into a fully produced song. But the best part is when a client hears the final version and says, “That’s exactly what I imagined.”
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most clients ask, “Can you make it sound more like [artist]?” My answer: “Absolutely – just send me some references and tell me what you like about them. I’ll keep your unique voice but guide it toward that vibe.”
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That producers just “make a beat” and it’s done. There’s so much behind the scenes – from sound selection and arrangement to mixing, vocal treatment, and emotional storytelling. Production is like building a world, not just a loop.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask what feeling or mood they want to convey. I also ask for a few reference tracks and what message or story they want the music to tell. This helps me get aligned with their creative vision from the beginning.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about your vision and don’t be afraid to share reference tracks. I’m here to translate your ideas into music, and the more I understand your vibe, the better the result. Let’s build something unique and meaningful together!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. MacBook with Ableton & Max/MSP 2. Apollo x6 Interface 3. Serum + Omnisphere 4. MIDI keyboard with knobs 5. A solar-powered USB hub
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been producing and teaching music for over 10 years. I started by composing MIDI arrangements and preparing students for university entrance exams in music. Now, I’m studying computer music at Dongguk University and run my own studio where I produce for artists and interactive exhibitions.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is emotional, clean, and cinematic. I love building dynamic progressions and layering textures that breathe with the song. Think soft synths, rich harmonics, and just enough punch to keep it modern.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with IU. Her music blends deep emotion with elegant minimalism, and I feel like my atmospheric and textural production style could complement her voice beautifully.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Start with a feeling, not a loop. The emotion should guide your choices in harmony, rhythm, and sound design. Technical skills are tools – but the real magic is in translating a vibe into sound.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on electronic-based music with emotional or cinematic elements. This includes K-pop, ambient pop, synthwave, and experimental sound design. I also enjoy crafting audio for interactive installations and digital art.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is translating abstract ideas into sound. Whether a client wants something “dreamy but punchy” or “soft yet cinematic,” I can turn that into music that fits their vision. I’m also known for my synth work and harmonic layering that adds depth to simple melodies.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring depth and texture. Whether it’s a pop song or a soundtrack, I focus on making the track feel alive – with emotion, space, and energy. I also bring a strong storytelling mindset, making sure the arrangement supports the message or mood of the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start with a short conversation to understand the artist’s vision and reference tracks. Then I move into sound design and sketching out ideas quickly. Once we settle on the direction, I refine the arrangement, add emotional dynamics, and mix/master the final product. I keep communication open throughout the whole process.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My main setup includes an Apollo x6 interface, UAD and Waves plugins, and monitoring through Epic5 speakers. I produce in Ableton Live and occasionally integrate Max/MSP for interactive sound processing. I also use Serum, Omnisphere, and vintage synth plugins like DX7 for designing signature tones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by artists like Porter Robinson, Zedd, and RM of BTS. I admire their ability to combine emotional storytelling with cutting-edge sound design. I also draw a lot of creative energy from composers like Ryuichi Sakamoto and experimental musicians pushing the boundaries of digital sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in full track production, especially for artists seeking emotional yet modern soundscapes. Most of my clients request electronic-based pop tracks, cinematic instrumentals, or customized music for performances and interactive media. I also do vocal arrangement and mixing to ensure the final product is polished and expressive.
