Interview with Michael Logozar
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have an ear for a good arrangement and know when to hold back to make room for a vocal or alternately to provide more emotion to carry the song along further.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For piano tracks, customers will send me a scratch track to work against, along with samples of the playing style they want to hear. I will usually provide back to them two versions for them to work from - one subtle, and one more prominent for them to pick from, along with a rough mix. Once the final take is approved I can also provide a finalized 'processed sound' along with a dry one for them to pick from. For co-writing or arranging it is more collaborative, but still I always start with getting to know the style of music the client is trying to achieve.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: ...that I only do piano music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: For writing/arranging I have a very good sense of song structure and melody. For performance tracks people regularly say I play with a level of emotion they have rarely heard before.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've been running studios in various professional capacities since 1998. My current setup is a boutique recording room specializing in acoustic piano recording on a world-class handmade Shigeru Kawai SK-7 grand piano, and a vast collection of software instruments for programming in film/tv/and vocal productions. I also record instrumentalists, and produce for singer songwriters.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: In the instrumental genres, I love the understated artists who have alot of space in their music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide underscore compositions for film & tv, and session piano tracks for singer/songwriters, pop, and country tracks. I also provide instrumental track programming for a variety of genres based on an ever growing set of software instruments.
