Interview with Paybe
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I mixed and mastered a track for an indie musician that hit 500K+ plays with zero promo. It had so much raw energy — my job was to shape it without softening it. It became his breakthrough song. That’s the stuff I live for.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A few singles for emerging rap artists, a soulful pop EP, and a side project blending ambient textures with trap drums. Keeps things fresh.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, but I’m always down to collaborate with great session musicians or vocal producers here. If we vibe, I’ll recommend dis
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital — because today, you can sculpt analog warmth and color with surgical precision, and undo bad ideas with a click. Best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won’t stop until your song feels right to both of us. It’s not just a job — it’s a collaboration.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That moment when the artist hears the final mix and goes, “Whoa, that’s exactly what I imagined — but better.”
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you make it sound like [insert famous artist]? A: I can get you close in tone — but even better, I’ll help you sound like you at your absolute best.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just balancing levels and adding plugins. Truth is — it’s storytelling with sound.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision for the track? What references inspire you? Where do you plan to release it? The more context I have, the more personal the result will be.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to their past work, but also check how they communicate. You’re not just buying sound — you’re buying trust, workflow, and taste.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apollo Twin X, HD650s, a laptop with FL Studio + plugins, Soundtoys Decapitator, and Valhalla VintageVerb — I’ll mix ocean waves into reverb tails.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started out mixing my own tracks over 7 years ago. That turned into helping friends. Then clients. Now it’s a full-on career. I’ve worked on many songs — and I still love every new challenge.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean but emotional. Polished but alive. A mix of modern punch and vintage warmth. I want the listener to feel like they’re inside the track :)
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tyler, The Creator. His sound design is bold, emotional, and cinematic. I'd love to help make it even more insane.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t mix on autopilot. Each song has its own rules. Trust your ears more than your eyes — and mute the reference sometimes to let the song breathe on its own.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly hip-hop, trap, pop, R&B, and anything melodic with energy. I love blending clean commercial sound with underground rawness.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Translating an artist's rough vision into a polished, professional sound without killing the vibe. I know when to go technical — and when to just feel.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, emotion, and identity. I don’t just make it “louder and cleaner” — I find the voice of the track and make it unforgettable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to the song multiple times to catch its soul. Then I clean and balance everything, enhance emotion with saturation and space, and finally bring it all to life with focused dynamics and wide stereo image. Every move is intentional.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a treated room with Yamaha HS8 + sub, Sennheiser HD650s for detail, Apollo Twin X for pristine conversion, and a curated plugin chain that gives analog-style sound in-the-box. Clean. Focused. Deadly accurate.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mike Dean for his space and grit, Jaycen Joshua for his clarity and punch, Finneas for minimalism with purpose. Also inspired by underground producers pushing limits in ways big names don’t.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mix and master songs to sound powerful, wide, clean, and emotional — whether it's rap vocals punching through a beat or dreamy pop melodies that need space and polish.
