Interview with Waylo
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I'm particularly proud of is my collaboration with the artist In Phases on the single "i like the way you kiss me." I had the privilege of contributing to the song's production, sound design, and overall creative direction. The track gained significant attention, especially on TikTok, where it went viral, leading to widespread recognition. This experience was especially rewarding because it showcased our ability to blend innovative sound design with engaging melodies, resulting in a product that resonated with a broad audience.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working with an artist named In Phases on some exciting singles. I’m also voice acting for a video game as the main character, while handling the music and sound design for the project. On top of that, I’m collaborating with local artists on their upcoming album, helping to shape their sound and bring their vision to life.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Jaamal Anderson recommended the site to me!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: That's hard to choose from! Analog gear has this warmth and depth that’s just hard to replicate, and there’s something about the organic feel of it that adds character to a track. Digital tools give me endless flexibility and precision, letting me dive deep into experimenting and fine-tuning every detail. I tend to use a mix of both, depending on the project. If I had to choose, I’d go with digital because of the incredible advancements in technology.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will approach every project with passion, dedication, and attention to detail. I’m committed to creating something unique that aligns with your vision while going above and beyond to deliver a final product that exceeds expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to take a project and elevate it beyond what was initially envisioned. I enjoy surprising clients by creating something completely unique from scratch, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how a simple idea can transform into something powerful and impactful.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Some questions that I get asked actually have been brought up in previous prompts here! To add to those, here are another two questions I commonly get along with my responses: "How long will it take to finish my project" The timeline really depends on the scope of the project. Some songs come together in just a few hours or a day, while others might take a few weeks. It also depends on any revisions or changes you might want along the way. "How involved will I be in the process?" That’s totally up to the client. I’m happy to collaborate as much or as little as you want. Some clients like to be hands-on with every step, while others prefer to let me take the lead. I’m flexible based on what works best for you.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think it’s all about waiting for a burst of inspiration when in reality, a lot of it comes down to hard work, refining ideas, and being really intentional with every aspect of a track. Whether it's crafting melodies, experimenting with sound design, or fine-tuning a mix, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that goes into making a song come to life. It’s a mix of creativity, technical skill, and patience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I try to ask these questions to help gather the right information to create something that aligns with their expectations: - What’s the overall vision or goal for this project? - Do you have any references or inspirations? - What specific sound or vibe are you going for? - What’s the intended audience or purpose for this music? - What is your timeline and budget for this project?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's make sure we’re on the same page about your vision for the project. The more details you can provide about what you're looking for, the better I can tailor my work to meet your needs. Whether it’s the vibe, the message, or specific sound elements! It’s also important to be open to collaboration and feedback throughout the process. That way, we can work together to create something that truly represents your ideas and goals.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Honestly, I’ve never really thought about this before, but if I were stuck on a desert island (and magically had Wi-Fi or some way to make music), I’d go with my laptop (with a DAW installed of course), my Scarlett 18i20, a portable MIDI, a pair of headphones like the Sony MDR-7506, and some form of charger that could theoretically work where I'm stranded at.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been around music my whole life. Growing up, I started by creating remixes on GarageBand and working on passion projects with friends just for fun. I’ve always enjoyed making mash-ups, but never released them due to copyright issues. Over the past 3-4 years, I’ve started to take music production more seriously, refining my skills and expanding my knowledge. Now, I’m focused on turning music production into my full-time career.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as ever-evolving and genre-fluid. There isn’t one name that fully captures it because I like to blur the lines and push boundaries. My music draws from pop, punk, rock, alternative, electronic/EDM, R&B, soul, and some jazz. I enjoy mixing these influences to make something that’s uniquely my own.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: It’s tough to pick just one, as there are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with! Beyoncé might be an obvious choice but I've always deeply admired her work. Her attention to detail and artistry are unmatched, and working with her would be incredible. Finneas and Billie Eilish are both huge inspirations for me and I admire how they push boundaries in production and songwriting. Doechii has such a unique style that blends genres, and I’d love to create something fresh with her. Jon Bellion’s creativity and ability to blend different musical elements is another big draw, as well as Zedd’s polished electronic sound. Snarky Puppy’s musicianship is unreal, and I’d love to dive into their complex arrangements. Remi Wolf brings such a fun and quirky vibe to her music, and Paramore’s energy and emotional depth are right up my alley. Each of these artists brings something totally unique to the table, and I’d love the chance to collaborate and learn from their creative process.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of my favorite tips would be to always think about space in a mix. Instead of cramming every instrument into the same frequency range, focus on how each element can have its own sonic space. Cutting unwanted frequencies from one track can make room for others to shine. By giving each element its own "place" in the mix, everything becomes clearer and more defined.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I’d say my strongest skill is songwriting. I really enjoy creating something from nothing and taking an idea or emotion and turning it into a full-fledged song. Whether it’s crafting melodies, writing lyrics, or shaping the overall structure, I focus on making sure each song feels authentic and resonates with listeners. There's something special about bringing a concept to life and watching it transform into something people can connect with.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I’d say my strongest skill is songwriting. I’m passionate about creating melodies and lyrics that connect with listeners, and I focus on crafting songs that feel genuine and impactful.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring fresh ideas and creative angles that might not have been considered yet, along with the technical knowledge to bring those ideas to life. I love helping shape a song’s vision and using my experience to make sure it not only sounds great, but also feels unique and intentional.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process starts with understanding the message or emotion behind a project. I spend time figuring out what it’s trying to say and how that should come across sonically. I usually look for references to help spark ideas and guide the direction. Once I’ve got a clear concept in mind, I get to work on creating that sound using different melodies, sound design, or sound effects. After a few iterations and tweaks, I shape everything into something that really feels aligned with the original vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is based in my home office, where I’ve created a comfortable and efficient space to work. I use a Scarlett 18i20 interface as the hub, along with a few different microphones and headphones depending on the project. For monitoring, I use PreSonus Eris 3.5 studio monitors, which give me a clear and balanced sound for mixing. I’ve also added some DIY soundproofing to help control the room. It’s a compact setup, but it covers everything I need to stay creative and productive.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from a pretty wide mix of artists and producers. Billie Eilish and Finneas really resonate with me—their production is so detailed and emotionally raw. I’ve always loved the energy and songwriting from bands like Paramore, Sleep Token, Bad Suns, Circa Survive, and Dance Gavin Dance. On the pop side, I get a lot from artists like Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Zedd—their sound is clean, catchy, and full of personality. Coldplay’s atmosphere and Jon Bellion’s creativity have also influenced how I think about building a track. All of these artists push me to blend emotion, texture, and strong melodies in my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work revolves around creating immersive audio experiences for my clients. I specialize in alternative rock, rock-pop, and pop music production. I also work in video game sound design and music, building detailed soundscapes and effects that bring virtual worlds to life. In addition, I provide voice acting services, lending my voice to characters and narratives to enhance storytelling across various media.
