Interview with MANABAL
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project that stands out was a collaboration with local Ecuadorian artists that garnered international attention. As the lead producer, I orchestrated the overall sound, blending cultural rhythms with modern techniques. This project not only showcased our local talent but also demonstrated how innovative production can bridge cultural gaps and resonate on a global scale.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m producing an exciting new album that fuses traditional Ecuadorian sounds with modern electronic influences. It’s a project that pushes creative boundaries and celebrates our rich cultural heritage.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, I collaborate with several outstanding professionals on SoundBetter. I’m always happy to recommend peers whose expertise complements mine, ensuring a holistic and top quality production experience for every client.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I value both. Analog gear brings warmth and character to a track, while digital tools offer unmatched flexibility and precision. By combining the best of both worlds, I create a rich, balanced sound that stands out.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver innovative, high-quality production that not only meets but exceeds expectations. My commitment is to ensure that every project reflects authenticity, passion, and a clear connection to your artistic vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the transformative power of music—turning abstract ideas into tangible, emotionally engaging tracks that connect with people on a deep level. Every project is a journey of creative discovery.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: A common question is, “Can you really capture the essence of my sound?” I always answer, “Absolutely. With careful listening and creative insight, I’ll translate your unique vision into a track that truly resonates with your audience.”
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think music production is just about clicking buttons on a computer. In reality, it’s a delicate balance of technical know-how and creative artistry that transforms raw ideas into emotionally powerful music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about your main musical influences, the overall vision for your project, and who your target audience is. These questions help me tailor my creative process to align perfectly with your artistic identity.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you want your music to say and be open to collaboration. I’m here to understand your vision and elevate it with my technical expertise, ensuring your project not only meets but exceeds your expectations.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: microKorg, Apollo Twin, ATC Monitors, Neumann Microphone, Gibson Guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been honing my craft for over a decade. My journey began with early experiments in electronic music here in Ecuador, and over the years, I’ve evolved into a dedicated music producer, continuously learning and adapting to bring fresh, captivating sounds to every project.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is dynamic and eclectic, deeply rooted in cultural authenticity. I seamlessly blend modern production techniques with traditional Ecuadorian influences, creating soundscapes that are both innovative and emotionally resonant.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with visionary artists like The Weeknd or Calvin Harris, talented musicians who are not afraid to experiment and push creative boundaries. Working with such innovators would be an incredible opportunity to blend my Ecuadorian roots with global music trends.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always focus on the emotional core of your track. Sometimes, simplicity is key. A well thought out arrangement that highlights the song’s core emotion can be far more effective than an overcomplicated mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across a wide range of genres from synth-pop, alternative and electronic to Latin rhythms. This versatility enables me to adapt to the unique style of each project while maintaining a consistent quality of production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to merge diverse musical influences with technical expertise to create a signature sound. I pride myself on transforming raw ideas into innovative productions that stand out in today’s competitive music landscape.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of technical precision and creative flair. My approach ensures that every song not only sounds polished but also connects emotionally with the listener, capturing the essence of the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by deeply understanding the artist’s vision, which informs the creative plan for the project. From there, I record the essential elements, carefully craft each layer during mixing, and finalize the track with precision mastering always aiming to evoke the right emotion and energy.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio in Ecuador is a blend of state of the art digital technology and classic analog gear. I work with a powerful computer running my preferred DAW as Pro Tools, Ableton and Logic Por X and also high quality audio interfaces, studio monitors, and a mix of vintage synthesizers alongside modern plugins. This hybrid setup allows me to capture a rich, dynamic sound.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am really inspired from The Weeknd, Tame Impala, Calvin Harris, Mike Dean and Kaytranada for their innovative production techniques. I also draw inspiration from talented local artists in Ecuador, whose creative fusion of traditional and modern sounds continually influences my work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in full-cycle music production taking a project from concept and songwriting all the way through to recording, mixing, and mastering. I work closely with artists to develop a sound that is uniquely theirs, ensuring every detail is polished and impactful.
