Interview with Billy Sane

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My debut album "Digital Disorder" under my project, "Billy Sane" has garnered nearly 3 million streams on Spotify alone. I wrote, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered 13 out of the 14 tracks on that project completely on my own. The exception is the song 'Feel Real' which I co-produced with my friend 'Mad Kelly'.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently wrapping up my second album under the project "Billy Sane" and starting my third simultaneously. I have no shortage of ideas or musical energy and need multiple projects going at once to take up my time.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No, I am brand new to the platform but i will be sure to do my research.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, generally because you can make it sound analogue (most of the time) though there is magic and fun to creating something analog.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I am never going to disregard your ideas, or tell you why something might not work until we try it together.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The people I meet, and the feeling I get when my ideas coincide with another's.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Alot of my client base has been musicians just starting out and they don't understand the pricing structure compared to something like a YouTube beat. Where people charge $30 for a lease. my answer is always to check my references, and I explain that I offer full rights and 50% royalties. unless we discuss something else prior

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I don't just produce, I write.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Basically I ask for some references, similar song or ideas (if any) then I figure out what specifically in that reference they want to implement into their songs/ songs, and the line of questioning usually varies after they give their answer, but if it can be explained or shown without references I always prefer that, because it opens up the potential for freedom, or creating something new.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Hear us out if we have an idea that might not seem like it aligns. we can always start over, or make alterations, but if you stamp it out early you might have pushed away something that would have improved the song drastically.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Computer, my Fender acoustic guitar, audio interface, headphones, and a microphone.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: This has always been what I wanted to do. Before I graduated high school, so just about 7-8 years I have been committing to this.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Energetic at times, yet deeply emotional, sad, angry, in love. it depends how I'm feeling when I make it. Or the idea I have prior.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: It would be incredibly fulfilling to work with Damon Albarn. I Love his production/ vocal style and think his ideas and mind could coincide well.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Most things in music have been done, but most things haven't been done your way.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Electronic, DNB, Electronica, Trap.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: The ability to write and create unique melodies, harmonies, and overall production in music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Anything I can, and anything the artist wants.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Quick and efficient, yet very precise. It varies from project to project but overall, I like to get ideas out immediately and evolve them as I go.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work with Ableton Live 12 Suite, with Yamaha hs8s, a Behringer UR 22 mk ii, Beyerdynamic DT 770 PROs, multiple guitars, and a 61 key keyboard. I use a lot of synths and plugins for my mixing and production, including Serum, xpand!2, OZONE 8, Antares products, Waves Autotune, guitar rig 5 etc.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Damon Albarn, Thom Yorke, 2hollis, Daft Punk, Crystal Castles, Depeche Mode, Snow Strippers, Suzy Sheer

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Original instrumental production
