Marcel Kolem on SoundBetter

With 9 years in the music industry and over 7 years as a producer, I’ve collaborated with numerous artists and bands across various genres. As a songwriter, I’ve contributed to more than 50 released tracks. Whether it’s crafting memorable melodies, powerful lyrics, or producing standout songs, I’m passionate about creating music that resonates.

With 9 years of experience in the music industry, I bring a deep understanding of songwriting, production, and performance. Over the past 7 years, I’ve worked as a producer and collaborated with a wide range of artists and bands, contributing to more than 50 released songs. As a multi-instrumentalist, I play keys, drums, bass, and guitar, and I’m also a vocalist.

In addition to my studio work, I’ve gained extensive live experience. I’ve toured with several bands and had the privilege of performing at major events, including playing drums at a large German music festival in 2022, which drew over 30,000 attendees per day. Whether on stage or in the studio, my goal is always to create authentic, impactful music that connects with audiences.

Interview with Marcel Kolem

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In 2022, I played as a drummer for a band and had the opportunity to perform at a music festival with 30,000 attendees. It was truly an incredible experience.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working with a band that is in the 80s synth-pop genre. It’s really been a great experience.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Since I haven’t been here for long, I can't say yet. But I’m sure there are countless amazing artists and music producers here with whom collaborating would be a wonderful experience.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I’m honest in saying that I work more with digital programs than with analog ones. However, I would never completely rule out analog. You never know when the right moment will come to use it in the right way.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You can be sure that I put all my passion into every project.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love the most is the variety. Many genres, many different artists. That’s what makes this job so great.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A question I hear repeatedly is: Do you know how I can become successful the fastest? And the answer is always: It depends on whether you're already giving 100% or if you're still just dreaming.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think there are some artists who believe I already know exactly what they have in mind, even though they themselves aren’t sure. Well, sometimes that might actually be the case :-)

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: It always depends on the project. Usually, I first ask if they have a certain idea of how they want their song to sound.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Every idea can be successful. You just have to believe in your dreams, and then you will make it.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Let me think... I would definitely bring a guitar for the campfire. Along with that, a microphone, and if possible, a piano.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: As a music producer, I have over 7 years of experience. I started as a session musician 9 years ago. Two years later, I decided to build my own recording studio.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is not about doing what everyone else does. There has to be something special for me to say, "This is what the song has that others don't."

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: That’s a tough question. I would say I enjoy working with all artists because each collaboration is an experience that can be channeled back into creativity.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Be authentic and be creative. If you think you can’t do something, try it in your own way.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Most of the songs I’ve produced have been in the pop and rock genres. There were many solo artists for whom I took care of the musical arrangement or even wrote the entire songs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is probably writing new songs. I try to put all my passion into every song I write. No matter the topic, whether it's love, fear, anger, or drama, I want the listeners to feel the song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to bring my personal style into every song. I don’t like it when things are just copied. Music is meant to create something unique with others. Whether I’m writing a song or producing for someone, it doesn’t matter. In the end, it has to be authentic.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: There is no typical process. The beauty of art is that you can always try something new, and that’s what makes the songs truly come to life.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I’ve built my studio setup year by year, and now I own the best of the best. Starting with ProTools and a range of plugins to meet almost any need. I work with multiple synths and keyboards to get a variety of sounds that bring the songs to life. I have a studio drum kit, as well as high-quality drum plugins.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: There are certainly many I could mention. From Max Martin to Andrew Watt, of course, Taylor Swift, and many others. Hans Zimmer is also a big inspiration for me, even though that's not the area I've been working in for years, but he's a very inspiring person to me.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I work most frequently with artists from the pop, pop-rock, and singer-songwriter genres.
