Interview with Andrea Zuppelli | Studio 21
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full song production (compose, arrange, edit, sound design) and record/edit guitar tracks.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My last production was the record "Piano 21" for No Names. Great artists to collaborate with and it took me all my passion and energy to create that album, sound designing it inspired the 90s typical records. We went out with 2 versions, one digital , one physichal. More to come on the wave of that project in the next future months!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both of them. I prefer the digital, but only certain quality devices, because of the reality of their emulations. In other cases real analog is unbeatable because of its warmth.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: It's 20+ years I arrange, mix and play guitar, but, for different life reasons I couldn't start doing it as a main work. Now it' time to dedicate to my studio!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock Productions
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually we begin with an idea (maybe a guitar and a voice or piano and voice), sketch recorded. We discuss about what could be the structure, the overall sound of the song. Then we record the main tracks (client provides me some of the "definitive tracks") usually the main guitars and the voice with some second backings, sharing me remotely, so I can start arrange the song structure. I love to have a direct approach with the client and when the almost overall arrangement is achieved, I start refining each track (drum programming, sound design / efxs), then have a first mix sending it to the client. We discuss about the result , correct it and then I do th final master of the song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I mix and produce 80% ITB , using the best plugins in the market. For the guitars, I prefer to record going OTB for the reamp, using my Fractal or Kemper according to the situation, or going direclty to my Marshall Preamp. I own a beloved Roland JD990 and an old ASRX PRO for great 90's synth/pad tracks.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Speaking about the sound design, Mix and Masters I'm in love with late 80s 90's productions. Love the albums' dynamic sound of that era, expecially the masters that didnt' sound too squashed because of the loudness war of our last years. My production masterpieces are records like Guns N' Roses - Use your Illusion 1-2 / The Spaghetti Incident?, Metallica - Ride The Lightning / Black album , Van Halen - F.U.C.K./ Balance, Pink Floyd - The Division Bell, which I simply find they sound incredibles! As a guitarist, I love great guitarists! My top favorite artists are Jimmy Page, Van Halen, Slash, Gary Moore, Joe Satriani, David Gilmour.
