Interview with Zeb (CrushMood)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Recently remixed/produced a track for an artist, it was a very special song for him becaus it was very personal to him. He told me how I really managed well to respect to "intention" of the song. Which is one of the greatest compliments you can get.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently producing several new projects under Crushmood, Mastering different dance tracks and producing tracks for my own.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment as I am very new to this platform. I would encourage you to check the others and make sure your music "fits".
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Mostly digital for flexibility and workflow speed, but I love using analog elements for warmth and character when the track calls for it.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver something original, honest, and emotionally resonant — with clear communication and professional quality from start to finish.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That moment when an idea becomes real sound when something abstract turns into emotion that others can feel. That’s the magic.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “How long will it take?” → Depends on the project, usually 1–3 weeks. “Can you make it sound like [artist]?” → I can draw inspiration, but I’ll always give it a unique identity. “What do I get?” → Final mix, stems, or masters — depending on what we agree on.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest mistake people see is that an Mastering Engineer is indeed needed. It is a second opinion, which is a lot more valuable than you might think. You're very biased to your own music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your creative vision and reference sound? What’s the purpose of the track (release, sync, showcase, etc.)? What’s your timeline and budget? How open are you to experimentation and feedback loops?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who listens closely, communicates clearly, and brings something original to your vision. A great collaboration is built on trust, creativity, and shared intention. Make it sure that the provider doesn't throw its mix through presets and a template.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Ableton Audio interface Headphones Simple Microphone, like a SM57 Compact synth (like a Digitone or Prophet-6 module)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started making music at a young age and gradually turned my passion into a profession. Over the years, I’ve worked on various solo and collaborative projects under Crushmood, exploring both artistic and commercial sound production. Also studying in the Netherlands at the Higher Arts University as an Audio Engineer
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Atmospheric, emotional, experimental — but always with structure and intention. I like blending abstract textures with accessibility.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: James Blake. His balance of minimalism and emotion, combined with bold sound design, is something I deeply resonate with. I’d love to explore that intersection together.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Use automation creatively. Small movements in filter cutoff, reverb send, or panning can make a huge difference in how dynamic and organic your track feels. And great mixing always start with a good fader balance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on electronic, ambient, experimental, and hybrid pop projects often collaborating with artists who want a modern yet emotional sound.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Sound design and building immersive sonic environments — giving productions a distinct mood and space.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A strong sense of atmosphere, emotion, and sound identity. I love finding the subtle details that make a track feel alive and authentic.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Discuss the vision and references with the client Create a demo or sketch that captures the essence of the idea Collect feedback and refine the track Add depth through sound design and textural details Mix and balance every element Deliver final files (stereo mix, stems, or masters as needed)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a hybrid digital setup focused on clarity and creative flexibility. DAW: Ableton Live and Protools. Audio Interface: high-quality, low-latency interface Monitors / Headphones: reliable reference setup for accurate mixing MIDI controller and keyboard for expressive input A mix of soft synths, plugins, and a few pieces of hardware synth/modular gear for tactile sound shaping It’s built for speed, precision, and creative flow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Disclosure, Kaytranada and Fred again.. Producers who combine groove, texture and emotion in a way that feels both human and futuristic.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly work as a Mastering Engineer, but like to do mixing and producing aswel. Creating full productions from the first idea to the final polish. Most of my clients come to me for unique instrumentals, modern electronic productions, or atmospheric soundscapes that blur the line between genres.
