Jakob Johnston on SoundBetter

Fun, affordable, and professional. I want to make your new project loud, punchy, and heavy. I do this because I love the work, not for the money.

Hey I'm Jakob Johnston! I have been in the heavy music space for 15 years and am starting my studio business. I don't have the most flashy credits, but I have a REAL passion to help make your records the best they can possibly be.

*YOUR FIRST PROJECT IS FREE*
I have a special offer for you! Don't spend your hard earned money upfront, I'll show you my worth by giving your first project free! This is a great opportunity for artists that have never worked with an engineer to get this premium service completely risk free. All I ask for in return is a positive review, percent of royalties, and proper crediting.

*1-ON-1 CALLS*
If you want a more live and personal approach to your project, we can use calls where you can watch me produce, mix, and master just like how you would do in a studio, so you know what decisions I am making in your music. Your music is important to me and you, so we should be as interactive as possible.

*UNLIMITED REVISIONS*
With your first free project, I am looking for your satisfaction not your money. I will revise your project until you are completely 100% satisfied.

*WORKS WITH YOUR SCHEDULE*
If you are an upcoming artist, I know that life can be extremely busy. Since I am working independently that means I can be flexible to fit my schedule with yours. No crazy deadlines, we can get your project done on a timeframe that works for you.

Interview with Jakob Johnston

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital right now because that's where my skill set is.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: My promise is that you will be 100% satisfied with your results. If I can't give you the results you want, I will refer you to someone else who can. You will not leave empty handed or worse off than you were.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love everything about my job. It is my passion and life-long goal.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: My biggest misconception right now would be people thinking I am bad at my job since I don't have any credits yet. We all start from nothing, and who knows, I might be the hidden gem you need.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: My advice would be to find someone that you can make a REAL friendship with. I think it's better to find someone that is friendly and genuine rather than someone that is cold and corporate.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I have been doing music since 2010. I have been producing, mixing and mastering since 2019. I am looking to eventually make this my full-time career.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I have a YouTube channel for all my tips: https://www.youtube.com/@realjakobjohnston

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I work on mostly modern metal/rock.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skill is producing and mixing

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring a new creative perspective, power, and clarity. I will make your music compete against the biggest bands so you have a fair shot of making a hit.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: First I will need to know your vision and a few reference songs you want to sound like. I will give you the technical requirements for you sending me your stems. Then we will work on live calls or however you prefer to work until you are 100% satisfied.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I am working completely in the box so my setup isn't the craziest looking. Most of what I do happens inside the Reaper DAW using plugins. I use KRK Rokit 5 Studio Monitors and AKG K240 Studio Headphones and a few mics like the sm57 and Super 55. I have an Arturia Keystep 37 MIDI controller and various synth libraries. Everything we need to make your record sound great is here!

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I am inspired by Joey Sturgis, Will Putney, Lance Prenc, Tyler Smyth, Josh Schroeder, and Andrew Wade.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I am mostly doing song-writing, session guitar, producing, mixing and mastering.
