Writer of 300+ songs. Mentoree of the seven-time Grammy nominated John Kosh of Apple Records. Collaborator of the late, Platinum-nominated producer Ari Blitz. Every song I make is elegant, timeless, and worthy of attention.
In my ten year career, I have written over three-hundred songs, all of which have been performed and tested in front of audiences across the Mid-West United States. From 2014 to 2022, I was mentored in aesthetics by the seven-time Grammy nominated John Kosh. I also collaborated with the late Grammy and Platinum nominated producer Ari Blitz.
Having worked with top-tier industry professionals, I know what works with an audience, and how to get the job done.

Dean is a great songwriter! He was quick in finishing the project and did the job well.
I've worked with Dean on a number of projects and seen him progress in his own work over the years. A true character in his creativity as an artist.
He’s an old soul who’s easy to talk to and easy to work with, kind, sincere , and prompt in services. His lyrics are clever and witty. When he’s focused, he’s FOCUSED! I’m looking forward to working with Dean again.
Interview with Dean Shearer
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Ari Blitz and anyone associated with him. He knows his stuff.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to stay home with the family. My breaks are changing diapers, but, hey, it beats being away.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A harp which I would learn how to play, the Great Books of the Western World, and something to carry water in. Maybe a case of Coke Zero.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 10+ years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Leonard Cohen. I'd like to know where he gets all of those stories from.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Manic obsession.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It's very minimalistic these days. I have found the keyboards, microphones, drum machines, and keyboards that I prefer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. You get more character and depth.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Indie-Folk, Indie-Pop, and Dreampop.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust in the creative voice. You might not understand it, but it understands you.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Separating the wheat from the chaff and refining the grains that are found within.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin by getting to know the character of my clients and their project. What is their outlook on life? How do they live? What do they want to accomplish with this project? I prefer video or audio chats and take extensive notes on all of this. Once I feel like I'm in their head, the writing begins. I go deeply into the music and pull out the best material I can find. I update my clients on the project once to twice a day.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My favorite producers are Jack Antonoff (Bleachers) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Bob Dylan has a song for every occasion; Leonard Cohen for when I'm feeling blue.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Lyrics and chords for bands to go over with their own instrumentation.
