Interview with Nathan Gabriel
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Horses for courses! Both have their strengths. Analog adds warmth and character, while digital offers precision and flexibility. Ultimately, it’s all about the workflow—using the right tools for the job to achieve the best result efficiently.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is Daydreams by Jakob Longfield. I mixed the track in the beautiful Tuscan countryside, and after a friend listened to the final version, he was moved to tears. He told me he’d never heard anything like it in his life! It was a truly rewarding experience, and I have to give a shoutout to Audeze LCD-X headphones for helping me capture all the nuances during the mix.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’ve just finished mixing and mastering a thick produced German pop song by Jonny vom Dahl, a well-known artist from The Voice of Germany. It was a great project to work on, and I’m excited about how it turned out!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to bring out the best in your music, ensuring it sounds polished, balanced, and emotionally impactful. I’ll work closely with you until you’re 100% satisfied with the final result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is that when I listen to an unmixed song, I can already hear the finished product in my head. It’s like a vision of what the track can become, and then I just explore the paths to get there. This process is fascinating and brings me into a deep focus tunnel, where I’m fully immersed in bringing the song to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I can do it myself, why do I need a mastering engineer? My answer: While you can certainly try to master your track yourself, a mastering engineer brings an expert ear and specialized tools to ensure your song sounds its absolute best across all platforms and systems. I have high-end speakers and headphones in a treated room, allowing me to hear every important detail that makes a track shine. Mastering involves optimizing loudness, tonal balance, and ensuring compatibility with streaming standards. I provide that final polish to make sure your track is professional and ready to compete at the highest level.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are about just making things “louder” or “clearer.” In reality, “fixing it in the mix” doesn’t always work—“you get out what you put in.” The goal of mixing is to enhance a great song, making it even better by improving its emotional impact, balance, and clarity. It’s about fine-tuning the details while preserving the song’s essence, using both technical expertise and musical understanding.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I typically ask prospective clients about their vision for the track, their reference mixes or masters, and specific preferences regarding tone, dynamics, and loudness. It’s also important to know the intended platform or format for the final track and any deadlines they may have.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to choose someone who understands both the technical and emotional aspects of your music. Clear communication is key—make sure your vision is heard, and don’t hesitate to ask for revisions until you’re completely happy with the result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Headphones (Audeze LCD-X), my developed Monitoring System, a mac/pc with Ableton installed.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and alongside that, I’ve been working as a mixing and mastering engineer. I’ve also been playing in live bands, which has given me a strong musical foundation. I’ve been doing this for several years, combining my technical skills with my passion for music.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a blend of precision and musicality, focusing on clarity, emotional depth, and preserving the song’s unique character. I aim to make every element shine while keeping the track authentic.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The 1965 - incredible productions! Lots of Space for creativity in soundsculpting
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One key music production tip: Contrast is key! If everything sounds bright, nothing will truly stand out as bright. Similarly, if everything is drenched in reverb, nothing will feel deep. Creating contrast in your mix—whether through dynamics, tone, or space—will make each element pop and bring your track to life.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Pop, Folk, Synthwave, and Singer-Songwriter music. However, I’m open to various styles and genres, as I enjoy working with a wide range of music. From classical to metal, I listen to and appreciate all kinds of music, which allows me to bring a versatile approach to any project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is combining technical precision with musicality. With a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, I bring a strong problem-solving approach to mixing and mastering. Combined with my background as a musician, I enhance both the sound quality and emotional impact of a track, ensuring it resonates while staying true to its essence.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring both technical expertise and musicality to a song. With my background as a musician and over 10 years of experience playing keyboards in live bands, I have a deep understanding of groove, dynamics, and emotion, which I apply to every mix. I focus on enhancing the tonal balance, dynamics, and emotional impact of the track while ensuring it translates well across different systems. My custom-built high-end monitors and selected analog gear allow me to achieve maximum clarity and depth in the sound. Through a collaborative process with the artist, I make sure the final result captures the essence of the song, leaving the client completely satisfied.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process starts with receiving the individual tracks along with one or two reference mixes or masters. I then have a personal discussion with the artist to clarify key aspects like tonal balance, dynamics, desired loudness, and the overall feel of the track. After that, I proceed with the iterations, incorporating the artist’s feedback into the mix until the client is 100% satisfied. For clients near Stuttgart, I’m happy to work together in person in the studio if needed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with high-quality gear designed to deliver precise and accurate results. I use custom-built high-end 4-way nearfield monitors to ensure every detail is heard with clarity. I also work with high-end headphones for accurate monitoring and analog equipment like studio tape machines to add warmth and depth to the sound. My setup combines the best of both digital and analog technologies, allowing me to achieve a balanced, polished sound for every project.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Job Bellion, Mike Crossey (Producer & Mixer the 1975, Lany), Matt Huber
