Interview with OctaveUp
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, Quantum ES4, M-Audio Keystation49, Headphones, Apple Mouse
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: To produce music for other artists; I have been producing music for about almost 2 years.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic Pro and Presonus Quantum ES4 as my DAW and Audio Interface. I have a home studio that has good equipment to make quality music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kygo because he is so talented and is considered one of the people who made tropical house more prominent. He is also one of my biggest influences so it would be honor to work with him.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I normally start with the chord progression with a piano or string instrument, I either do block or rhythmic progression when starting. I then build the drop out and layer sounds and find melodies and/or vocal chops that fit the chords and vocals. I normally do drums at the point I have the drops initial plan laid out. At that point I build out the build, verse, chorus, etc.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to create quality productions that you like to the best of my ability.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creating amazing and empowering music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What sort of mood do you want this production to sound like? Do you have vocals prepared and if so do you want them produced into this project? Can I promote your song on my social media alongside your release promotion?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as you can be about what you want.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Upbeat, Fun, and Melodic
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Add variety to each section of your song. Add something different every 4-8 bars. This keeps the listener listening.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic Dance Music (House)
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My keyboard, music theory skills and my creative production ideas.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My new single On My Mind, the production hits hard and gives me festival vibes. I was the producer of this song.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on new singles for OctaveUp to build my portfolio. In addition to making beats to help progress my music production skills.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it is portable. It may not have the same sound as analog but you don't need to carry it around, with digital you have it at a click of a button.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My keyboard and music theory knowledge
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kygo, Sam Feldt, Frank Walker, Rob Late, and Martin Garrix.
