Interview with RUBEN CORES
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My private studio is located in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain, though I spend more than half of my time working for other studios and living in Madrid. The studio is equipped with an Antelope and Focusrite interface system, along with Heritage Audio HA-73X2 preamps. The recording rooms, housed in a fully treated space, are designed specifically for guitar recording and feature cabinets with Celestion, Greenbacks, Black Shadow, Mesa Boogie, and several other combo amplifiers. In the control room, I have a vast collection of pedals of all kinds, including my inseparable TS9 and the original-era Nobels ODR-1. My amplifier selection includes Friedman, Marshall, and both modern and vintage Mesa Boogie models. As for guitars, I own a collection of about 15 instruments, including several PRS models—of which I am a direct endorser—alongside Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Takamine, Luis Guerrero, Epiphone, and others. Everything runs on a Pro Tools system, which I handle with skill and precision thanks to my years of experience working in studios as both a musician and an assistant for recording and editing. I also use Logic Pro for programming. Regarding microphones, I have a solid selection for guitar recording, including Shure SM57 and SM58, AKG C414, Sennheiser MD421, and JZ Vintage 12, among others.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’ve been working on what I consider the biggest project I’ve ever been part of since 2023, but it still can’t be made public until a few months from now.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently in the pre-production phase with two Spanish artists and a musical theater production.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don’t know him personally, but I’ve been following Daniel Uribe for a while, and I think he does great work.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Half and half, because I believe both worlds are interesting today. Although I still prefer analog equipment for recording.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Good sound and good execution.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To be able to live and enjoy my life doing what I truly love.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Right now, I couldn’t tell you. Over the years, I’ve been asked all sorts of things.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That anyone can do it correctly.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What kind of sound and feel are you looking for? Do you have any references or inspirations that you want to draw from? What is the overall vision for your project, and what do you want to convey through your music?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: That they try to bring a clear idea of what they want to do with their music and where they want to take it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A PRS Custom 24, simply because it's the perfect guitar for me. A tuner, because I find it essential. A metronome. A box full of picks. And some kind of system to connect the guitar on a deserted island, haha!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been playing for over 25 years and working professionally for more than 15. I played with local bands and artists of all kinds until my professional life took a turn when I moved to Madrid at 18years old and started working in large musical theater productions and with artists who had national and international recognition.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versatility, sound, fluency, and good technique are key qualities that I value in music and strive to bring to my work.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: With John Mayer, because for me, he is one of the leading guitarists who bridges all the musical worlds that most attract me—blues, rock, the elegance of pop, sound, and feel.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Although it’s not an exclusive trick, always aim to record as close to the final sound as possible from the start. This helps avoid excessive processing during the mixing phase and ensures a more natural and polished result.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Pop and Rock artists, but thanks to various projects I've been involved in, I've also had the opportunity to work with genres like Celtic music and Flamenco, as well as their fusion with Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Speed in finding the right sounds, solid timing, great feel, and precise tuning are everything to me.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a deep understanding of tone, dynamics, and musicality to every song I work on. My goal is to enhance the track while staying true to its essence and the artist’s vision. Whether through carefully chosen guitar tones, precise mixing decisions, or creative arrangement ideas, I strive to bring warmth, character, and depth to the music. My experience as both a musician and an engineer allows me to blend technical precision with artistic intuition, always aiming to elevate the song to its fullest potential.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Ask the client what kind of sound and musicality they want to achieve, listen carefully, and find the best way to make it happen.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Rock and Pop musicians like: Hendrix, Page, John Mayer, Steve Lukather, Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, Clapton...
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Music and great sound are very important to me. When I receive a song to work on, the first thing I do is listen deeply and immerse myself in what the song conveys. I try to understand how I can shape my work to match what the client envisions. I'm always looking for the best sound choices to enrich the song.
