Interview with Myles Walsh
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with a new client, I like to ask a few key questions to make sure I fully understand their vision and needs. Some of the questions I typically ask include: 1. What is your overall vision for the project? This helps me understand the vibe and direction they’re going for. 2. Do you have any reference tracks or inspirations that you'd like me to keep in mind? This gives me a clearer idea of the sound and style they want. 3. What’s the purpose of the track? Whether it’s for a commercial, film, or just personal release, knowing the end goal helps guide the production. 4. Are there specific elements or sounds you want to include in the track? This helps ensure I bring their ideas to life, especially if they have any specific sounds in mind. 5. What’s your timeline for this project? Understanding deadlines helps me plan my workflow and manage time effectively. 6. Do you need any additional services, such as mixing, mastering, or vocal editing? This helps me gauge the scope of the project and any extra services they might need. These questions help me build a solid foundation for delivering the best possible result that aligns with their goals.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: This answer is going to be a bit boring... but I strongly believe all I would need is a laptop with Ableton Live on it! Also, a solid internet connection on the island would be nice too haha!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I produce in Ableton Live 12, monitoring with Yamaha HS7s and Sennheiser HD600 open-back headphones for precise sound accuracy. My setup includes a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface for clean recording and a Novation Launchkey Mini 25 for hands-on control. I currently have a very minimal studio setup, but it's all I need to achieve great results!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is my track "On My Mind". My role in this project was composer, producer, and mixing engineer. This track was a big milestone for me because it captured the deep house/minimal sound I love while maintaining my unique style.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m working on a few different projects: I’m producing original tracks whilst trying to curate a high-quality Sample Pack with kicks, basslines, stabs, and percussion, designed for producers who want that rolling, underground sound. I’m offering freelance work on SoundBetter which includes various services, helping artists refine their tracks and bringing their ideas to life. I'm also focused on building my brand, whether it be growing my presence online or refining my website. There’s always something happening in the studio, whether it’s personal projects, client work, or refining my skills!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is to deliver high-quality, professional, and unique music productions that align with their vision while adding my own creative touch. I ensure: ✅ Groove & Energy: Every track will have a tight, engaging groove that works on the dancefloor. ✅ Attention to Detail: I focus on sound selection, mix clarity, and arrangement flow to create polished, professional results. ✅ Communication & Collaboration: I keep clients in the loop throughout the process, making sure their feedback is heard and implemented. ✅ On-Time Delivery: Meeting deadlines without compromising quality. ✅ Satisfaction Guaranteed: I’ll work until the client is 100% happy with the final product. Whether it’s full production, mixing, mastering, or sound design, I treat every project like it’s my own and aim to exceed expectations.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that music production is just about dragging loops together or pressing a few buttons; when in reality, it’s a deeply technical and creative process that requires years of skill development. People often underestimate the time spent on sound selection & design; crafting unique, high-quality sounds that fit together perfectly. Groove & arrangement; balancing energy, flow, and dynamics to keep a track engaging. Mixing & mastering; fine-tuning every element for clarity, punch, and warmth. Creative decisions; knowing what to add, what to remove, and how to shape a track’s emotion. Another misconception is that all producers sound the same, but every producer has their own unique approach, style, and sonic signature. I make sure my work isn’t just technically strong but also distinctive and full of character.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: If I’m working on a project for a client, I adapt my style to their vision while still bringing my ear for tight grooves, dynamic arrangements, and crisp, professional mixing. My style is a blend of groovy, deep, and emotive house music, drawing inspiration from minimal house, deep tech, and UK garage influences.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is my main workflow because of its flexibility, efficiency, and the endless creative possibilities within Ableton and modern plugins. High-quality digital synths and effects can now replicate analog warmth while offering precision and recall. That said, analog gear has a unique character and hands-on feel that can add depth and warmth to a track. While I primarily work in the digital realm, I always aim to capture the organic, rich sound that analog brings.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the creative process; taking an idea and transforming it into a polished, professional track that resonates with people. I enjoy shaping sounds, building grooves, and bringing out the best in every project. Seeing an artist’s vision come to life and knowing that my work contributes to something that moves people on the dance-floor or through their headphones is incredibly rewarding.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like Chris Stussy, Janeret, or Flume. Stussy and Janeret’s approach to groove-driven house music aligns closely with my style. On the other hand, Flume’s experimental sound design and innovative approach to electronic music have been a huge inspiration for me. Working with him would be an incredible opportunity to push creative boundaries and explore new sonic possibilities.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my journey about 4 years ago, honing my skills in house music production, sound design, and mixing & mastering. Music has been my passion for over 15 years, and I’m now fully committed to making it my full-time career.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If producing from scratch, I begin with groove and drums, then build the bassline and melodic elements to create a cohesive vibe. I refine the arrangement, add textures, and ensure every sound serves the track’s energy. When mixing and mastering, I focus on balance, warmth, and clarity to make sure the track translates well across all sound systems; from club speakers to streaming platforms.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who understands your vision and can bring out the best in your music. Communication is key - be clear about what you want, but also be open to creative input. A great producer or engineer won’t just apply technical skills; they’ll enhance the groove, energy, and overall vibe of your track.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more - focus on making every element count. Instead of layering too many sounds, choose high-quality samples and synth patches that complement each other.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on minimal, deep house, and deep tech music. I have also worked on UK Garage, Dubstep/140, Drum & Bass, and Hip-Hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to blend emotive, atmospheric elements with dancefloor energy is what sets my music apart.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My focus is on crafting tracks that feel dynamic and alive. I take the time to select the right sounds and textures to make every element fit together seamlessly, ensuring the track has both energy and depth.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists like Chris Stussy, Janeret, Kolter, Enzo Siragusa, and East End Dubs - producers who master groove, space, and energy in house music. Their ability to craft hypnotic, deep, and dancefloor-ready tracks pushes me to refine my own sound. I also take inspiration from early influences like The Presets, Art vs. Science, Flume, and Skrillex, who shaped my love for electronic music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My goal is to help artists achieve a polished, dynamic sound that stands out. I specialize in producing, mixing, and sound design for minimal and deep house music. Whether it's creating full tracks from scratch, refining existing projects, or adding high-quality elements like groove-driven drums, lush pads, and hypnotic basslines.
