Interview with shatz
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I mixed a Rock single and the end result sounded like Arctic Monkeys, maybe because i used the same distortion on the lead vocal that they use. it wasn't big or anything but it was my first time mixing a Rock record and i would say i did a good job.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Im producing an Afrobeat album for an artist Im currently working with, it should be released some time in 2026 after we send it to the mastering studio at the end of this year.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, Im new to this.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because thats the world i come from, yes i use analog gear but thats not the world that i come from.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I wont stop until the client and I are happy with the project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The process, creative decisions and the end result.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: There are a lot of different questions i get asked during the mix but i always give the truthful anwser.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That i just mix and produce loud music, its a little bit more that that :)
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What feel does the client want out of that track he want mixed or produced.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Definitely read the manual for preparing a track to be mixed, if you don't bring me a track thats prepared properly i cant waste time on doing the job for you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neve 1073LB preamp, SSL Master processor, API 550A EQ, we don't have it at our studio but i had a chance to use it and i like the color of it a lot, Dovina GACE, Aphex Aural Exicter
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started making beats when i was in 7th grade, it was just going to school, watching tutorials at breaks, getting home and making beats all day, started getting placements but i wanted to take it to the next level so i started rapping, released two EPs under a different name and realized i know how to mix my vocals pretty well since i have a deeper voice so it used to be tricky for me, afer the EPs i started mix professionally for other clients, met Skansi (one of the biggest producers in Croatia) he invited me to his studio, after i played him my beats he said that i am one of the best producers in Croatia for that new sound and gave me a job. Now i work here and mix for almost all big names here in Croatia.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Me personally i love the raw sound, crushed sounds, heavy beats, and attacking melodies, but most of my clients aren't on the same page as me so i can have a very polite sound to my beats and mixes too, im like a chameleon i can really adapt to whatever, its about the energy me and the artist share.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with J.I.D, he is my favorite artist and has been since day one, I met him in Amsterdam and had a chan but the timing wasn't right to work on something.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When you are mixing rap vocals, if the vocal is aggressive and it needs that upfront feel, duplicate the vocal takes and on the duplicate, compress the hell out of it,Ii'm talking about 10 to 1 ratio and things of that nature, bring down the dB and add it slowly to the point it feels right, once u done that you gonna get strong and upfront vocals for a track that needs that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-Hop/Rap, Trap, RnB, Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I understand the sonics.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a professional sound but i would say i mostly bring what the track needs, at least in my mind because music is very subjective, if my new clients like my vision, we work great together, old ones kinda let me experiment with slight changes to a mix to make it feel more alive.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start with listening the whole demo, after i done that, i consolidate the project if its necessary if not i start to mix, using the AB method i see how i am progressing with mixing a track, first i mix the vocals then i mix the beat, that way i save my ears and i can kinda see what the beat needs depending on a vocal.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: So I work at one of the best studios in Croatia where every major artist has been. I mix on an SSL 9000 console with a lot of hardware equipment, such as Distressor, UAD Apollo Twin Interface and a lot more. I usually record with a Neumann U87 but we have a Shure SM7B laying around and a few AKG mics for a piano recordings. We have a drum fully miced up and 4 electric 2 bass guitars in the studio.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love the production of Pharell Williams, Timbaland, and i am a sucker for that UK sound so producers like JME really inspire me. Mixing Engineers such as Leslie Brathwaite, Jaycen Joshua are the ones who i study and look up to, also Skansi, the biggest mixing engineer in Croatia, i work for him and he is the one who gave me a lot od knowledge I have today.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually mix and make beats in the genre of Rap and Hip-Hop records for my clients but i mixed a handful of RnB records and some Pop beats.
