Interview with Darius 'tabu' Lipsey
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on several track for the group Trybe out of Indiana and a personal Ep.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working as an engineer for 2 years.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have technical proficiency with pro tools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jaycen Joshua and MixedbyAli inspire me with their work ethic and the results they produce with artist that like Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar who I admire as artist.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process when I receive a song for mixing begins with verifying all the needed files are available and where they need to be. If there is a reference track available I will listen to that several times while taking note of song key, tempo if those aren't provided. I generally will use the vocals as the main focal point to create a volume level mix before moving on to editing timing issue, and general noise (clicks, pops, loud breathes, etc). Once those boxes are check I use a combination of effects, EQ shaping, compression, reverbs, and delays to make an awesome mix.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am doing most of my mixing and post production editing in Pro Tool 12.4. I also make beats which is primarily done with the latest version of Logic Pro X and a M-Audio Code 49 midi Controller. I'm monitoring and mixing through JBL LSR305 5" monitors and Sennheiser HD 650 Headphone in a treated room. I'm mixing completely in the box with various plugins including analog emulations Waves, Sonnex, Plugin Alliance, SoftTube and more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly I provide my clients with quality mixes that are ready for mastering by myself or another engineer.
