Interview with Chloe Lim
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on about 4 tracks with a producer - very upbeat pop songs with great writing, and the collaborator trusted my musical judgement, so it was a wonderful experience.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My first EP.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I will have a look!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both are fine!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will always put in my best efforts to help you produce a stellar vocal arrangement.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The creative freedom and watching a project's arrangement come together.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much do I charge? - This depends on what the client would like!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only offer vocals! I am a multi-instrumentalist with extensive experience and am classically trained.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Which vocal offers would you be interested in? What emotions would you like to convey in this song? Is there a specific journey you would like the vocals to follow?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about what you would like, trust that my experience and passions will work to your benefit and know that my main goal is to make you happy!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My songbook, a roll-up pencil with a rubber, my guitar, a capo and my Chillys' bottle.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing the violin and piano when I was 7, and learned guitar when I was around 14. I have been teaching since a young teenager and began to write songs shortly after learning the guitar. I did YouTube covers and performed with my friends, working on covers and originals with them. I am now performing in venues across London and my debut single has been showcased on BBC Introducing ahead of its release.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, delicate, powerful, building, classical, explorative, full
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Rosalía, due to her ideas, vocal abilities, vision, artistry and phenomenal performances.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be open!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on a range of music - pop, rock, EDM, singer-songwriter, ballads, acapella, etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Identifying the journey and purpose of melodies and lyrics, so I can perform the song in the most sensitive, informed way according to clients' needs.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a particularly emotive and passionate quality to a song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will either get to work on the lead vocals and then build harmonies, ad-libs and stacks around them. I sometimes also write out sheet music so I can visualise chords and harmonies quickly.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Rode NT1, Shure 58, Focusrite Scarlet 2i2, Logic Pro X
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by Rosalía, Caroline Polachek, Imogen Heap, Stromae and Florence and the Machine for a combination of their vocal and production abilities.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do lead vocals, harmonies, vocal stacks and ad-libs. I also offer songwriting.
