Interview with Ivan Ponomarenko

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: What I love most about my job is the creative freedom and the opportunity to help bring an artist's vision to life. Every project is unique, and I get to shape the sound in a way that enhances the music’s emotion and energy.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I’d describe my style as dynamic, immersive, and textured. I aim to create mixes that feel both powerful and emotional, with a strong focus on clarity and space. Here’s a breakdown: Dynamic Range: I love giving tracks movement, allowing them to breathe and evolve. Whether it's a quiet, intimate section or an intense breakdown, I make sure every part has the right energy. Layering & Depth: I use a lot of texture in my mixes—whether it’s subtle background elements, atmospheric effects, or rich synths. This gives the music a sense of space and depth, pulling the listener in. Punchy & Heavy: For genres like metal and punk, I always prioritize impact. The drums and guitars need to hit hard and be upfront, but everything else in the mix should serve to complement that energy. Overall, I try to make the music feel like it has a story to tell, using production techniques to enhance the emotion behind each song.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: usually work with metalcore, modern metal, djent, and punk. These genres often involve high energy, intricate rhythms, and heavy but precise production. I focus on capturing the raw intensity of the music while making sure every element, from the drums to the guitars, is clear and impactful.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: My strongest skill is creating depth and atmosphere in a mix while maintaining clarity and balance. I excel at sculpting sound so that every element has its place, whether it's a massive wall of sound or a minimal, intimate arrangement.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I bring a combination of technical expertise and artistic intuition to every song. My goal is to enhance the music while staying true to the artist’s vision.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: 1. Pre-Production & Planning Discuss the vision with the artist or band. Define the sound, style, and production approach. If needed, assist with arranging or pre-recording demos. 2. Editing & Arrangement Clean up takes (comping, timing adjustments, noise reduction). Fine-tune arrangements if needed. Add layers or additional instrumentation where necessary. 3. Mixing Balance levels, EQ, and dynamics. Add effects (reverb, delay, modulation) for depth and atmosphere. Automate key sections for better movement and emotion. Reference mixes on different playback systems to ensure consistency. 4. Mastering Apply final EQ, compression, and limiting to optimize loudness. Ensure translation across different listening environments. Prepare final formats for streaming, vinyl, or CD release. 5. Delivery & Feedback Share the final product with the client for approval. Make minor revisions if needed. Deliver high-quality files in the requested format.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I primarily work as a sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist. My main tasks include recording, mixing, and mastering music projects.
