Interview with Hrafnagud
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Many projects on fiverr, I was always blown away at the quality and quantity of ideas
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My own personal project 'Runatyr', working on a black metal album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment but hopefully soon
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, Analog is fun to use but some digital plugins are too convenient to pass up
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will work on the track until you are satisfied
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Writing and recording, creating riffs and seeing a project come together
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Pricing, I usually try to price everything based on the song-length and time it would take to complete. This can be weird at first since sometimes the song hasn't been written yet but with reference tracks and your opinion we can get an estimate, I can work with an answer like "3-4 mins"
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's a really cool way to hear new music, I ask for reference tracks as it helps steer me in the right direction but a lot of the time I find new music this way
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If there are any
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Ask questions, get involved
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I'm not too into brands so I'd have to answer generally. Guitar, Bass, Drums, Shure Sm57 and a PC
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing bass and guitar since I was 13, started recording my own songs around 18
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Black metal meets dungeon synth
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anyone who is enthusiastic about the process
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on your own style
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Black, Death and Doom metal but not exclusively
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Riff writing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Atmosphere and tremolo picking
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Creating and working on a demo using plugins, then when everything is finalised I begin recording with mic's and amps
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Humble studio, Jackson and Ibanez Guitars, Peavey Bass, Fender Bassbreaker Amp, Crate amp for Bass. Natal Archadia Drum kit with Sabian Cymbals, 5 mic setup (kick, snare, a pair of overheads and room mic) Mainly work in Reaper but have used many different DAWs, analogue set ups available through use of 4-track cassette recorders and mixers.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Burzums DIY approach has always appealed to me, money has clouded our judgement. A lot of affordable gear can sound good, especially for this style of music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Black metal compositions and recordings for all instruments
