Interview with Alexander Blue
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on a project with the incredibly talented Amelia Doll, where we created a one-take recording featuring both piano and vocals that still gives me chills every time I listen to it. The synergy we had during that session was extraordinary, and it resulted in a performance that was raw, emotive, and absolutely captivating. My role was to compose and perform the piano piece, while Amelia delivered an unforgettable vocal performance. It was an unforgettable experience that truly showcased the magic of live music collaboration.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on an album "Fragments" that will be out in March 2025. It has a very lofi-funk-disco vibe, with classical influences.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Nemanja - is incredibly talented. Ultimately though, I would recommend me.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It depends on the sound that fits with the project before me. I prefer a blend of both analog and digital. Analog provides warmth and richness, while digital offers precision and flexibility. Combining the two allows for the best of both worlds
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver high-quality, emotive, and professionally polished compositions and recordings that exceed your expectations. Your satisfaction is my top priority.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the creative process and the chance to bring someone's musical vision to life. Every project is unique, and it's incredibly fulfilling to see the final result resonate with clients and audiences.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often ask about my turnaround time and revision policy. I typically deliver projects within 7 days, with up to 3 free revisions included to ensure their complete satisfaction.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that being a pianist and composer is just about playing the right notes. In reality, it's about infusing emotion, creativity, and storytelling into every piece. People often underestimate the amount of dedication, practice, and emotional investment it takes to craft music that truly resonates. It's not just about technical skill; it's about creating an experience that touches the listener's soul.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask clients about their musical vision, specific requirements, preferred styles, and any reference tracks they have in mind. This allows me to tailor my approach to their unique needs and create something truly special for them!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know What You Want: Have a clear vision of your project. If you come in saying, "I dunno, just something cool," you'll end up with something you didn't actually want. Be specific—know your style, your influences, and what you're aiming to achieve.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My grand piano, a portable recorder, a laptop with music production software, high-quality headphones, and a solar-powered charger, that doubles as a sunshade for the gear, to keep everything running.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Over 30+ years from age 3, I've worked with a variety of artists and producers. The path is curvy, bumpy, but always moving foward, and I'm continually expanding my skills and musical horizons
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a fusion of classical precision, jazz improvisation, and pop sensibility. I strive to create music that is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant. I'm an 80's baby, so I came up listening to the greats on repeat.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Hans Zimmer. His ability to create evocative and powerful film scores is truly inspiring, and collaborating with him would be a dream come true
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always keep your session recording from beginning to end. Even between takes, sometimes the best magic comes out of the most unexpected moments. "Hey what if we tried this, "cue music" and that little riff/brainstorm is what carries the rest of the writing process.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work on a diverse range of music, including covers and original compositions in classical, jazz, pop, rock, and film scores.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to adapt to various musical styles and genres, delivering high-quality performances that cater to the specific needs of each project.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of technical expertise, creativity, and emotional depth. My piano performances add a layer of sophistication and expressiveness, elevating the overall impact of the song. I love to "play" with 7th's 9'th's diminished chords, and unique drops.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process begins with understanding the client's vision and requirements. I then create a draft composition, gather feedback, and refine the piece through revisions until it perfectly aligns with the client's expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with a high-quality Yamaha Clavinova piano, state-of-the-art recording equipment, and professional software like Ableton 12 Suite. This setup ensures pristine sound quality and seamless production
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from legendary pianists and composers like Ludovico Einaudi for his contemporary classical style, Herbie Hancock for his innovative jazz improvisations, and Elton John for his dynamic rock and pop compositions.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in crafting bespoke piano compositions and recordings for various projects, including studio sessions, live performances, film and TV scoring, and collaborations with artists and producers.
