Interview with Emil Norbelie
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Doing this professionally for many years, working with many different clients and artist, and receiving NOTHING but 5-star reviews. I feel confident enough to promise you that you'll be happy with the results, given I have all the information I need.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: For production, I think it's important, at least for me to be inspired, full of ideas and open. Everyone has a "producer block" once in a while. But if you just sit down and try to make something, despite maybe not wanting to. You often tend to create your own inspiration, which is an amazing feeling. For mixing I would recommend to first of all listen to songs you like, and analyze why you think they sound good. Maybe compare it to your own mixes. Also, digging into how compression works and how to "properly" use it in a production has helped me A LOT. Don't do things in a specific way or order because, "it's the way to do it". Always use your ears and focus on the actual sound, because in the end, that's the only thing that matters in a song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I am currently involved in quite a lot of work in different styles and genres. Mostly ranging from House/EDM, to pop songs together with other songwriters.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think I've always had a sense for melodies. And I have always thought that the melodic part of a track is the most important and the one that makes it stand out and become memorable. I am quite particular with what I like, and don't like. I often have a quite clear vision for a song In my head early on, and I then do everything I can to mirror that. That makes me also focus a lot on detail, such as sound selection and mixing etc, which I didn't really fully understand when I first started producing. So in the later years I have focused a lot on mixing and the "technical" part, which I have gotten really good at, and I have even received praise from Cuttingroom®. I would say I am very well rounded and versatile at this point, but of course still learning and progressing every time I make a song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A production that is, first of all, the way YOU want it to be, and aligned with your vision. And then of course, accompanied by melodies and mixing that meets the industry standard and could be played on the radio etc at any moment.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends on what my job is. But if it is producing a song in a specific style or genre, I usually try to really listen to it first and see if any inspiration comes, which often happens. Sometimes I already have an idea in my head, and other times I try different things and just sort of "jam" until something good comes out of it. It's almost a different process every time.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My inspiration is VERY broad. Ranging between rock such as Pink Floyd and Oasis. To old school house like daft punk. To modern pop and house such as Tame Impala, Theweeknd, Fred Again, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, to rap artists... and too many others to mention. My broad taste in music is definitely one of the reasons for how I am able to produce a lot of different "styles" and genres. There is almost always something in every genre that inspires me. And I always try to bring the things I like into my own productions.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My most common work is producing original pop, hiphop or edm instrumentals. It is also quite common for me to mix and master others work.
