Interview with Shiva Ganesh Goud
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: None
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on an album that explores the concept of a future dystopia, with the central theme being the realization that the world we are living in is, in fact, the future. The project delves into the tension between our present reality and the eerie recognition that we’ve already entered a dystopian future, exploring both the emotional and societal impacts of this realization.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No. I don't know anyone that well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It really depends on the context of the track, but for me, I tend to gravitate more toward digital for the flexibility and precision it offers. Digital production allows me to easily manipulate sounds, experiment with different effects, and layer multiple synths or samples without worrying about the constraints of analog gear
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to always deliver high-quality, unique music that stays true to their vision. I commit to putting in the time and effort to fully understand their needs, whether it's crafting the perfect beat or fine-tuning a mix to make sure every element shines. I’ll work collaboratively with them, making sure they’re involved in the process every step of the way.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I believe that I’m capable of achieving anything, no matter the obstacles. Nothing can stop me from reaching my goals and pushing forward with determination and confidence.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you help with mixing and mastering? Yes, I offer both mixing and mastering services. While I’m still honing my mixing skills, I make sure everything sounds balanced, clear, and polished. If there are specific aspects you want adjusted, I’ll make sure to focus on those.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is probably that music production is just about making beats or simply laying down sounds. While that’s part of it, it’s really about creating a complete sonic experience. It involves a lot of technical aspects like arrangement, mixing, and understanding the emotional impact of each sound. A good producer doesn't just throw together loops—it’s about crafting a cohesive track that flows well and enhances the artist's vision. Another misconception might be that all producers can instantly make a hit song, but the reality is that creating something special takes time, experimentation, and fine-tuning. It’s a process of trial and error, and often the best results come from collaborating and refining ideas together.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When I’m working with a new client, I like to ask a few key questions to make sure I’m on the right track and fully understand their vision: What’s your overall vision for the track? – This helps me understand the mood, energy, and style they’re going for, whether it’s a vibey R&B ballad, an upbeat pop anthem, or a laid-back hip-hop track.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be Clear About Your Vision
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop – Still necessary for music production, but it would also be useful for learning survival skills, watching tutorials, or even keeping a journal. Water Filtration System – A portable water filter or purification system to ensure I have access to clean drinking water. High-Energy Food (MREs) – Ready-to-eat meals or protein bars would keep me fueled and focused. Solar Charger – So I could keep my laptop powered without depending on traditional power sources. Fishing Gear – To catch fish or other food, ensuring I have a sustainable food source.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path in music production started a few years ago when I first got into making beats as a hobby. I’ve always been into music, but it wasn’t until I started experimenting with different genres—pop, R&B, hip-hop—that I realized producing was my passion. I focused a lot on learning the ins and outs of synths, mixing, and arrangement, and over time, I started building my sound.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as modern, atmospheric, and synth-driven, with influences from pop, R&B, and hip-hop.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with The Weeknd because his music blends R&B, pop, and synth-heavy production in a way that really resonates with me. His ability to create atmospheric, emotional tracks while keeping them mainstream and catchy is something I admire. I feel like my style—especially my synth work and melodies—would fit perfectly with his sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of my favorite music production tips is: Make your melodies more interesting by using layering and counter-melodies.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop, R&B, and hip-hop, often with a synth-heavy, modern sound. I love creating smooth, emotional R&B beats, hard-hitting hip-hop instrumentals, and catchy pop productions. Since I’m inspired by The Weeknd, my music often has a blend of moody atmospheres, retro-futuristic synths, and deep basslines. I also experiment with different styles like trance and blues, incorporating elements from various genres to keep my sound fresh. Whether it’s a slow, vibey R&B track or an energetic pop anthem, I focus on making every song feel polished and unique.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is melody and sound design, especially when it comes to synths. I have a good ear for crafting catchy, emotional melodies that fit perfectly within pop, R&B, and hip-hop tracks. Whether it’s a smooth, atmospheric pad, a retro-futuristic lead, or a hard-hitting bass, I know how to shape sounds that give a track its unique character. I also excel at creating the right vibe for a song. I pay close attention to the mood and energy, making sure every element—from the chords to the drums—supports the overall feel of the track. This helps me bring depth and emotion to my productions, making them stand out. Mixing is still something I’m improving on, but I make sure my beats and arrangements are already solid before they even reach the mixing stage. That way, the song has a strong foundation no matter what.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of polished production, emotional depth, and a modern, synth-driven sound to every song I work on. Since I draw inspiration from artists like The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, and Daft Punk, my style blends atmospheric synths, hard-hitting drums, and smooth melodies to create a rich sonic experience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process depends on what I’m working on, but generally, it follows a structured yet creative flow. Here’s how I usually approach a track: 1. Idea & Inspiration I start by finding inspiration—whether it’s from a melody in my head, a song I admire, or just playing around with synths and chords. If I’m working with an artist, I’ll discuss their vision and reference tracks to get a clear direction. 2. Beat & Instrumentation I lay down the foundation with drums and bass. Since I love working with synths, I usually experiment with different sounds, layering pads, leads, and arpeggios to create depth. If it’s an R&B or hip-hop track, I focus on groove and space to leave room for vocals. 3. Arrangement & Structure Once I have a solid loop, I build out the full structure—intro, verse, chorus, bridge, etc. I make sure the song flows naturally and keeps the listener engaged. 4. Mixing & Mastering Since I’m still refining my mixing skills, I take extra time to balance levels, EQ, and add effects like reverb and delay for depth. I reference my mix on different speakers and headphones to make sure it sounds good everywhere. Mastering is the final touch to make sure it’s polished and ready for release.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: DAW: I mainly use [insert DAW, e.g., FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro] for production, mixing, and mastering. MIDI Keyboard: I have a [insert model] for laying down melodies and chord progressions. Synths & VSTs: I rely on plugins like Serum, Omnisphere, and Analog Lab for rich, dynamic synth sounds. Audio Interface: I use a [insert model] to ensure clean recordings and accurate playback. Studio Monitors & Headphones: My main monitors are [insert model], and I use [insert headphone model] for reference when mixing. Microphone: Even though I focus on production, I have a [insert model] for recording vocals when needed. Other Gear: A few MIDI controllers and FX plugins to add depth to my mixes.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The Weeknd is definitely a big inspiration for me, especially when it comes to R&B and synth-heavy production. I also admire producers like Max Martin for his ability to craft catchy, polished pop songs, and Metro Boomin for his hard-hitting yet atmospheric hip-hop beats. Timbaland’s creativity with rhythms and textures is something I look up to as well. I’m also drawn to the synth work of artists like Daft Punk and Kavinsky—there’s something about those retro-futuristic sounds that really resonates with me. I try to incorporate a blend of these influences into my own production style, whether it’s through smooth melodies, deep basslines, or intricate drum patterns. Who knows, maybe one day my sound will inspire someone else the way these artists have inspired me.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Beat Production – Creating custom beats for artists in pop, R&B, and hip-hop styles, often incorporating synth-heavy elements. Mixing & Mastering – Balancing vocals and instruments to get a polished sound, though you're still refining your mixing skills. Ghost Production – Producing tracks for artists without credit, helping them achieve a professional sound. Remixes & Enhancements – Tweaking existing songs, adding new elements, or remixing them to fit a modern vibe.
