Interview with jaydoubleyoube
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar Strings Pen & Paper
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of creativity, technical expertise, and a deep appreciation for music’s emotional core. With my background as a professional musician and producer, I approach every song as a storyteller, focusing on how each element can enhance its impact. Using my analog and digital hybrid setup, I add warmth, depth, and character that make a track feel alive. Whether it’s enhancing the groove with rich bass tones, creating dynamic vocal layers, or crafting an arrangement that complements the song’s message, I aim to bring out its full potential. Collaboration is key—I listen closely to your vision and contribute ideas that align with your style while elevating the track’s overall vibe. My goal is to create a song that not only sounds incredible but also resonates deeply with the listener.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project begins with a detailed discussion to understand your vision, goals, and the unique character you want for your music. From there, I tailor the process to fit your needs: Pre-Production: I’ll work with you to refine your ideas, set up the session plan, and prepare the right instruments, gear, and effects to match the sound you’re aiming for. Recording: Using my analog console, carefully selected microphones, and my collection of analog effects, I capture performances with a focus on warmth and clarity. Whether we’re using the 24-track digital tape machine or the 8-track cassette recorder, every detail is recorded with care. Editing & Arrangement: After tracking, I fine-tune the performance, ensuring everything aligns with the vision. This might include arranging parts, enhancing dynamics, or adding additional elements to the mix. Mixing: I combine analog processing with digital tools, running tracks through the console and effects like reverb, chorus, and compression to create a dynamic, rich mix that feels alive. I primarily work in Logic Pro X, but I’m adaptable to other DAWs if needed. Finalization: Once the mix is complete, I prepare the tracks for mastering or provide analog-style polishing to give the final product that professional edge. Throughout the process, communication is key. I involve you at every stage to ensure the result not only meets but exceeds your expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a hybrid space where analog warmth meets digital precision. At the heart of the setup is an analog console that provides hands-on control and characterful sound shaping. I record primarily on a 24-track digital tape machine, but I also have an 8-track cassette tape machine for capturing vintage-inspired textures. I work with a range of analog effects, including a lush hall reverb, a classic chorus, dynamic compressors, and an SVT bass preamp for that unmistakable low-end warmth. My setup is highly versatile—I can seamlessly integrate digital signals into the console, ensuring flexibility for modern production needs. This setup allows me to deliver everything from pristine digital mixes to rich, analog-driven recordings, tailored to the unique vision of each artist.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by the music of the 60s and 70s, which laid the foundation for my approach to sound and production. Bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, The Kinks, and Steve Miller taught me the power of innovative songwriting, bold arrangements, and studio experimentation. I also draw from the raw energy of The Animals and The Troggs, the rich harmonies of The Mamas and the Papas, and the soulful grooves of Motown. These influences, combined with the meticulous production of Alan Parsons and the minimalistic brilliance of Rick Rubin, inspire me to merge analog warmth with modern precision in my work, always aiming to create music that resonates on every level.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients involves recording, mixing, and adding a unique analog touch to their projects. I specialize in enhancing tracks by running them through my vintage gear and analog console to create a warm, organic sound that digital production alone can’t achieve. This includes everything from mixing multi-track recordings to producing custom arrangements with my collection of iconic synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7 and Korg Monopoly. I also offer mastering services for artists who want their music polished and ready for release, while maintaining that distinctive analog character.
