Interview with Brien Nelson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently finished a full length album for the Rock group Cranberry Suit. I'm a very proud member (bassist) of the band and we all look forward to the albums release inn 2025.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently editing, mixing, and mastering a full length album for a friend. It is an older project from a previous band he was a part of that never saw completion.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not currently.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Either/Or depending on the scenario. Both are valid, but not always the right choice. The equipment must also be available.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will provide you the best possible final product that I can with the guarantee it will meet industry standards.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I'm the first person to hear the final product.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: It's easy and anyone an do it. It's also cheap work and shouldn't cost so much.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do you have a vision for your project? What is it? What is the main focus of your project?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: You will receive the best possible final product I can offer.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My Mac Book, an electric guitar, a bass guitar, and a pair of headphones. Thats all.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been a musician for three decades and a producer for two. I received my Music Production Bachelors of Science (MPBS) degree through FulSail University in 2014

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Organic, emotive, and real.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Rick Rubin. I would love to pick his brain.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Gain staging cannot be avoided if you want your audio to sound good.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Mainly Rap, Rock, Hard Rock, and Metal. I have done singer/songwriter and orchestral as well.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I am an editing ninja.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I have listened to so many different albums throughout my life. I take all the "good" and leave the "rough" behind. I aim to make each project as real to life as possible without over producing.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Organization is key. Session setup, analyze and clean tracks, edit stems for time and volume issues, mixing, mastering, enjoying the process.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Mac Book Pro, Pro Tools, Yamaha monitors, Waves plugins (among others), Izotope, AKG and Beyer Dynamic headphones. Also a keen ear for what sounds good.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Rick Rubin is a major role model for me. I love listening to his interviews about art and his production style. I appreciate his different perspective of the production process.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mainly remote mixing and mastering. I sometimes meet with clients at a designated spot for live recording sessions as well.
