Interview with Lisa Meegan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am proud of the Drop Diary work. We are collaborating remotely through file sharing. We share feedback on the song, the mixes, and collaborate in text.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on a 2nd drop diary album with my partner, as well as recording some original music with my bandmate in 6s & 7s (local original act in LA).

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital has made it so easy to collaborate.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You'll get a quality product.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Singing is the core of who I am. It provides me the opportunity to touch people emotionally and give them joy.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: What do you sound like. I say Janis & Ann.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it's easy.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Depending on the assignment - if prewritten and just needs recording I check for style preferences. If writing is involved, I ask about themes or concepts. Then the obvious ones about when it's needed by, etc.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be clear on your expectations, desired outcomes, and timelines.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My taylor guitar, paper & pencil (does that count as 1?). There's no power on a desert island, so I'd just stick with the basics.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been singing since I was 5 years old. I've been singing in clubs and recording for the past 45 years. I'm looking to support artists who want to get their music heard.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Rock singer. Gritty, soulful. Can be powerhouse, bluesy, and soft as well.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Nikki Sixx. I think he's a great songwriter and provocative with his music.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Don't overthink it.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Rock, pop, and folk.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I have a great ear and arrange well balanced harmonies and other types of backing vocals. My writing is less about the throw-away words and more about the message.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Emotion. I can connect with the music and provide a vulnerable view into the song.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I upload the track into GB and listen to it. Work with any lyrics provided and provide an initial track for the client to review. If I'm writing, I listen to the emotion of the music to write the lyrics. I like to tell stories in the writing to pull the listener in.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a macbook and an adapter that I use to connect my AKG414 studio mic. I use garageband to capture the vocals but can export 24bit files for quality stems.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: That's a big list. Classic rock like the Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Janis, Heart, and Deep Purple. I love 80s heavy metal - Judas Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden. I'm a big fan of Chris Cornell's work. Love the blues players John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, BB King. Love the folk stuff from Neil Young, David Crosby, and Joni Mitchell.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I take recordings and write lyrics and do vocal arrangements.
