Interview with INDRANIL CHOWDHURY
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: It was a Devotional Song Project. My role was to Sing, Compose, Produce Music, Mix/Master and Play Tabla. You can listen to a short clip of the track in my SoundBetter profile. Do provide your feedback when you contact me.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on 4 Devotional Tracks, 1 Sufi Song and 1 Sample Tracks Project.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I don't know anyone on SoundBetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer both. Actually it depends on the project. If it is a project which requires more realistic and natural sounds, then I prefer Analog, but if it is a project which needs some digital sound textures like spacial sounds or some spiritual vibes, then I prefer Digital Music. And sometimes I use both in a project if there is a requirement. Ultimately, my intention is to create a good music track and this is what I keep in my mind rather than the technical or theoretical things.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Quality of work!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Endless Creativity & Independence.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Mostly, my clients ask for the fast delivery, and I try to convince them to give me a bit more time if the date they are expecting is too less for the music creation. Creativity doesn't come instantly to the mind. We have to think, feel, imagine and then do some practical work on the softwares to get the imagination into a sound track. It's a process which is beyond any deadlines or a particular time slot. Still, I try to be on time as much as I can.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I might sound like very strict and arrogant but honestly speaking I am very friendly to every human being and love to talk and express my thoughts. I'm a happy soul and love to spread happiness to everyone I meet.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I may ask them about their maximum budget for the project and try to reduce my costs a little, as it may impact on the decision for choosing my services. I would also ask for more references and options from the client to have more flexibility in the music creation.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Before paying any money, talk to me briefly about your project, so that there is no misunderstandings in future. Try to have a clear mindset of your requirements. This helps the conversation to be more specific towards the project. If a client can have more than 4 projects to give, I can provide good discounts on the final cost. Also, please try to maintain a very hygiene conversation throughout the project duration.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apple MacBook Pro, Tabla, Harmonium, JBL Bluetooth Speaker and Canon EOS R5 Mark II (Mirrorless Camera with RF 50mm f1.8 Lens).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career by doing live concerts for Singing, Tabla and Harmonium. Thankfully, I was able to add many more streams into my career path which includes Music Production & Teaching. I am doing this since 2008.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Simplicity is my style. To stay away from fancy music style is my key to work. I imagine music in a way which is easily understandable for the listeners, so that all the listeners can enjoy the music without feeling the discomfort to their mental peace. The more we create complicated music, the more we go away from our listener's hearts.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with some great Indian Classical Musicians like Pandit Venkatesh Kumar, Ghazal Singer- Hariharan, etc. because they perform live and doing live music is the most difficult task for a musician as you have to be very spontaneous for creating new ideas. It also makes you feel so new to the music because every moment you create something new which brings new colours to your musical performance. You also discover your new version every moment which is so satisfying.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Understanding the mood of the music you want to create and trying to imagine the final outcome before you start creating music, will give you so many ideas and clarity for your production. Also, we should try to maintain the originality of the sounds we are using in the entire music production, like Guitars, Strings, Flute, Any Indian Instruments or Any Vocals, all these should sound like the original sound and not an artificial sound texture. This is very important to keep in mind because this becomes the identity of a Music Producer.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Spiritual, Meditation, Devotional, Royalty Free Music and Sample Music Tracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Singing, Creating Music and Playing Tabla & Harmonium. Also, I believe I'm good in explaining things which actually leads me to teach others. So' in short, Teaching is one of the things which I'm good in.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to bring life in a song. Whatever I create, I try to make it sound peaceful. I try to work on a track until it's ready to touch the heart of the listeners. And at the end, I look for the client's satisfaction which is what makes me feel satisfied.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I discuss about the project briefly with the client. Understanding client's requirements is the most important thing for me. Then, I give my thoughts and the exact budget for the project. If the client agrees on the costs, I proceed further with the discussions and ask for some references from the client, which actually helps me to understand the client's musical taste or liking. At the end of the discussion, I give an approximate date for the final delivery. Sometimes, I deliver the projects 2-3 days late but this delay is very rare to happen because sometimes creativity takes time and for the best outcome I prefer a delayed delivery with the best quality rather than delivering on time with some compromises on the quality. One very important thing to keep in mind is- I don't like to work with proudy people. I try to avoid clients who have bad/rude behaviour and less patience while talking, because it impacts negatively on the project's outcome and my mental peace. In the first 2-3 minutes of conversation, the first impression gives me a good idea of a client's behaviour and mentality, and the decision whether I should continue the discussion with the client or not.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an Audio Studio Setup where I Produce Music on Software, record Live Music with Live Instruments and Musicians, provide Online Music Lessons and record Video Clips (if required in a project). I work in Apple & Windows both Operation Systems for Music Production and Mixing/Mastering. I use Arturia Midi-Keyboard, Dell Curved 42" Monitor 5K Resolution 120Hz Refresh Rate and Focusrite Audio Interface. The DAWs I use are Logic Pro & Cubase.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Producing Original Music and being more Creative. Also, a good musician is always very calm and respectful to not only his clients but to every human being which is what inspires me the most. I have observed that a musician whose music is so peaceful and touches the heart of the listeners, is first a very good hearted soul and a human being before he becomes a musician, and so I try to be like.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Produce Sample Tracks, provide Royalty Free Music, make Chanting/Spiritual Music Tracks and Provide Lessons. But for a producer, any kind of music he does is interesting for him, as he is living for music and enjoying his music not for the popularity or any kind of greed, but for his self satisfaction. And a musician is satisfied when his clients are satisfied. So, true music is a worship, not a business. We really need a pure mind to do pure music which touches the heart of the listeners.
