Interview with Gaëlle
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on a reggae/dub project as a lead singer. I was very proud of this collaboration because the musicians were incredible (Soul Syndicate), they're legends of reggae music, they worked with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Besides that the sound engineer is also a legend (The Scientist) and the work he did on the mix was exceptional and very impressive!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on my second album and also on all the projects that clients send me.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It depends on the project. For a project with a vintage sound I would choose analog but if it's a project with modern sounds I would rather choose digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To immerse myself in their project in order to deliver the best! I also promise high quality work; clean, professional and precise vocals; amazing harmonies; and easy communication.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To discover songs of all different styles and to be able to help people with their project. And I love people's reaction when they hear the final result and the feedback they give me.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most commonly questions are: - What are the delivery times? I answer that it depends on the project but that I tend to have a quick turnaround time ( between 2-8 days). -Do you have any backing vocals ideas for my song? I answer that I like to compose freely and create backing vocals arrangements , I always find inspiration. I have no problem following a reference track or reproducing the backing vocals already existing on the song if the client already has a specific idea in mind. -Can I send you more songs to work on? And I answer YES!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that it's easy and doesn't take time and that anyone can do it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How can I help you with your project? Do you have any reference songs that would guide me towards the sound, feel, energy you're looking for? Would you like me to add backing vocals? Do you need me to do it quickly or are you in no hurry?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The advice I would give is to give as much detail as possible regarding what you are looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Power source, a powerful computer, Microphone, Genelec speakers, interface.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have always loved making music since I was a little girl. I joined my first band as a lead singer when I was a teenager then I never stopped again! I integrated various reggae band and gospel band, both in studio and live as a backing vocalist for several years. Then I joined a professional gospel band. Then I started my solo career with the release of my first EP. I work a lot on Protools. Then I started working on a wide variety of projects doing studio recordings as a lead singer or for backing vocals. I've been in music for almost 20 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a smooth tone of voice, clear and soulful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Stevie Wonder because he is an artist who has such a deep understanding of music and such musicality in his voice.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Pay attention to details and nuances and be as precise as possible.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop music but also a lot on soul, funk, reggae, disco, vintage...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest skill is the deep undersatnding of what a song needs. But it's not the only one! I would say my strongest skills are my harmonies, my technical skill, creativity, musicality, versatility.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a very professional understanding of what's needed. I will bring creativity and musicality. And with my harmonies I bring a level of richness and warmth to the song that elevate it. My vocal layering add a depth that wrapped around the melody.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the song for the first time, reading the instructions provided by the client to really get a feel for what he's looking for. Then I record a few takes with my ideas and make a draft. I check that is corresponds well with the client's expectations. Then I record paying attention to nuances and details. Because precision is so important ! Then I edit if necessary and clean the tracks.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work on Protools. I record with a professional microphone (Neumann) that goes through a RME preamp.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: This inspires me with a lot of possibilities for collaboration.
