Interview with Shinamik
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Honestly, I haven't had the chance to share much of my work publicly yet, but I’ve written a lot of lyrics over the years that I’m really proud of. Some of them have been shared with close friends or people in my life, but they’ve mostly remained personal for now. What makes me proud of them is the connection I feel to the words I’ve written. Even though they haven’t been seen by the public, those lyrics hold a lot of meaning for me. I’m looking forward to the day when I can share them more widely and have others connect with them too.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I’m working on a song called "Shadow." It's about someone who’s deeply in love but feels like they're losing their sense of self in the relationship. They start to feel more like a shadow of their partner, rather than their own person. The song explores the emotional struggle of losing individuality while being in love, and how that can affect a person’s identity and well-being.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Since I’m still building my connections in the industry, I haven’t had the chance to work with many professionals on SoundBetter yet. However, I would recommend looking for someone whose style aligns with your vision and goals for your project. SoundBetter has a great community of producers, vocalists, and songwriters who specialize in different genres, so it's important to explore and find the right fit for your specific needs. Once I have more experience with collaborating on SoundBetter, I’ll definitely have more recommendations to share!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I do have a special place for analog because of its warmth and unique character. There's something about the tactile nature of analog equipment that feels more personal and authentic. However, we are in a digital era, and digital tools offer unmatched convenience, precision, and versatility. For now, I lean toward digital because of its efficiency and the wide range of options it provides, but I definitely appreciate the charm of analog when I want a more organic sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to you is that I will always put my heart and creativity into every lyric I write. I’ll work closely with you to understand your vision and ensure the lyrics reflect your message and emotions. I’m committed to delivering high-quality work that resonates with you and your audience. Whether it’s a playful, fun song or something deeply emotional, I’ll stay true to the essence of what you want to express. You can count on me to be reliable, open to feedback, and dedicated to making sure you're happy with the final result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A fun misconception about my work is that I write lyrics solely about deep or emotional topics. But I actually love pizza so much that sometimes, I end up writing fun or quirky lyrics about it. While my work is often focused on emotions and stories, I’m also not afraid to get playful with my writing. It’s all about finding inspiration in the little things, and pizza definitely deserves its own verse sometimes!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What is the vision or message you want to convey with this song? Understanding the core message or theme helps me tailor the lyrics to reflect your goals. 2. Who is your target audience? This will help me craft lyrics that connect with the right people and fit the desired style. 3. Do you have any specific genre or sound in mind? This helps me determine the tone and mood of the lyrics to match the music. 4. Are there any artists, songs, or lyricists that inspire the direction you're going for? This gives me insight into the vibe you're looking for. 5. What is your timeline for this project? Knowing the timeline allows me to plan my work accordingly and ensure timely delivery. 6. What kind of collaboration or feedback do you expect throughout the process? I want to make sure we're aligned on how involved you'll be in the creative process.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When hiring a lyricist or songwriter, I recommend looking for someone who can truly capture the emotions and themes you want to express. It's important to find someone who listens to your vision and can bring it to life in a way that feels authentic. Communication is key—make sure you’re both on the same page in terms of style, tone, and direction for the song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Boat – To escape the island or explore for resources. 2. Satellite phone – For communication and calling for rescue. 3. Fishing net – To catch food and sustain yourself. 4. Water purifier – To ensure you have access to clean drinking water. 5. Solar-powered charger (or something to charge your phone) – To keep your satellite phone charged in case you need it for emergencies.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been writing lyrics for a long time. When I look back, I realize I wrote many lyrics that I now find funny, but at the time, they felt like a big deal. My songwriting journey has definitely evolved over the years
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I focus on writing lyrics that capture real, raw feelings—whether it’s love, heartbreak, self-discovery, or moments of reflection. I tend to write in a way that’s relatable, drawing inspiration from the people around me, TV shows, or books.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to collaborate with artists who aren’t afraid to embrace deep, raw emotions in their music. I admire those who pour their heart into their lyrics and aren’t afraid to explore vulnerability or complex feelings. Artists who value honesty and authenticity in their work would be the ideal collaborators, as I believe music that connects emotionally has the greatest impact.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When working on a song, don't limit yourself to the first idea that comes to mind. Try to explore as many variations of a melody, lyric, or arrangement as possible—experiment with different directions. By creating multiple possibilities, you give yourself the freedom to choose the one that resonates with you the most. This process allows for creativity and ensures that you end up with the best version of the song that truly fits your style and vision.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I enjoy working on songs across various genres, but I’m particularly drawn to pop, indie, and alternative styles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to capture emotions and tell stories through my lyrics.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As a lyricist, I bring raw emotion, depth, and relatability to a song. My strength lies in crafting lyrics that resonate with listeners on a personal level, often drawing inspiration from the people around me, TV shows, and books. I focus on storytelling, creating vivid images and experiences that listeners can connect with. I also bring flexibility to the creative process, being open to collaborating with producers, musicians, or vocalists to ensure the lyrics complement the music perfectly. Whether it’s a catchy hook or an emotionally charged verse, I aim to elevate the song's message and help convey it authentically through words.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: find my inspiration by observing the people around me, watching TV shows, or reading books. I pay attention to the emotions, interactions, and stories that stand out to me. This helps me connect with deeper themes or ideas for my lyrics. Once I have a concept or feeling, I write down the ideas in my diary or on my phone. From there, I refine the lyrics, focusing on structure, rhythm, and flow, while making sure the emotional impact stays strong. If I’m working with others, I’m open to collaboration, and I adjust the lyrics as needed to fit the vision and music.
