Interview with Shalom "J.Storm" Miller

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: It’s hard to choose just one project, given the incredible opportunities I’ve had to work with iconic artists, but I have to highlight my experience working with Missy Elliott, particularly on her Cookbook album. That project pushed me to new levels as a producer and brought out some of my best work. It was an unforgettable experience that challenged me creatively and professionally in ways I’ll always be proud of.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Music has always been my passion, and I constantly have projects in motion—whether collaborating with majoror indie labels or developing emerging artists, often all at once. My biggest passion now, though, is building music education programs through my nonprofit, Power Move Education & Development Group. We focus on creating equitable educational opportunities for young people, especially in underserved communities. Learn more at www.powermoveed.org.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: There are so many talented people, but I have to give a big shoutout to Daniela Rivera, who inspired me to join SoundBetter. She’s a world-class mixing engineer and a genius in hiding—her work is absolutely top-tier.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I have a deep love and respect for analog, but I’m definitely more of a digital-age producer. With today’s high-end processors, we can emulate that classic analog warmth so well that it’s hard to justify sticking solely to analog. The way music is made now demands speed and flexibility, and digital gives me that while still capturing the vibe of traditional analog sound. It’s the best of both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver a polished, industry-ready product while challenging them to tap into new areas of their skills and creativity. I strive to bring out elements in their music they may not have even considered, and I’ve never failed to create a “wow” factor for those I’ve worked with.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most about my job is connecting with new people and building genuine, lasting relationships. Through my work as a music producer, I’ve formed friendships that have in some cases lasted over 20 years. These connections often outlast the success of a song or project, and that’s something I truly value.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients often ask about my background and how I’ve worked with the big-name artists I’ve collaborated with. These conversations often turn into mentoring sessions, as they’re curious about how I’ve achieved success in the industry. My ability to produce is rarely questioned, and if it is, it’s quickly addressed through my work. People are usually more interested in the journey behind my accomplishments.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that I just make beats or handle the music. While I’m happy to provide that when needed, as a music producer, my role is much broader. I oversee the entire project, collaborating with the client to ensure it’s completed successfully and aligns with their goals. Often, my involvement extends beyond the song’s completion to support the client in achieving their broader vision.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask prospective clients about their creative vision, goals for the project, and any references or inspirations they have in mind. I also inquire about their timeline, budget, and how hands-on they’d like me to be during the process to ensure we’re aligned and can create something impactful together.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice is to ensure you’re ready for the level of service I provide. This isn’t arrogance; it’s about expectation of quality. Just as there’s an expectation on me to deliver exceptional work, I expect clients to bring a certain caliber of commitment and vision to the table. That mutual respect and readiness are what lead to great results.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Mac computer( everything I need is in there), my speakers and woofer (that counts as one, lol), a U87, an Internet router(gotta be able to get those updates), and a set of reference headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path has been a journey of passion and perseverance, starting over 20 years ago. From honing my craft independently to collaborating with award-winning artists, I’ve built a career rooted in innovation, creativity, and helping others achieve their musical vision. 25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is robust, full of high energy, and designed to evoke powerful emotions; it’s all about creating music that gives you the feels.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: ’ve worked with many of my dream roster of artists, so now it’s about finding the right connections and alignment to create something fresh, impactful, and magical with music.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Go deeper. Don’t settle for the surface idea—explore the emotions and intent behind the music. The more authentic the connection, the more impactful the final result will be.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I specialize in pop, R&B, and hip-hop, focusing on crafting a mainstream, commercial sound that stands out.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is music production, as I excel at helping artists, songwriters, and producers uncover deeper connections to their music, bringing out elements they may not have realized were there.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a polished, industry-ready sound and a deep connection to the music, helping artists tap into the emotions that resonate with their fanbase and ensure the song leaves a lasting impact beyond just a first listen.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process starts with understanding the DNA of the artist and their project. I dive beyond the surface idea to uncover the deeper roots of their vision. By connecting with their core inspiration, I help shape the project into something that truly resonates on a personal and impactful level.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup is designed for top-tier production and mixing, featuring industry-standard gear like Avid Pro Tools, Waves plugins, and high-quality monitoring systems. For more details and a 3D tour, check out the full facility specs here: https://homeformusic.org/3d-tour

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by trailblazers like Pharrell, Timbaland, and Missy Elliott. Their ability to innovate, break boundaries, and create timeless, genre-defying music constantly motivates me to push the limits of my own creativity.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients includes music production, mixing for an industry-ready and polished sound, and A&R consultation to help artists refine their vision, select the right material, and position their music for success.
