Interview with Mr. MBONA

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is Taken by Gyna. I wrote the full lyrics and melody for the entire song, which blends Kompa and Zouk elements with emotional storytelling. It’s a bold, reflective piece where the artist flexes on a toxic ex through her new relationship, and the second verse I wrote captured that mix of confidence and vulnerability in a way that really hit. I didn’t just write words and melodies, I crafted a voice that felt like hers. That’s why it stands out.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently building a strong online catalog and taking on international clients to expand my impact and income beyond local limitations. I'm especially focused on custom songwriting projects and vocal demo collaborations.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet personally, but I’m always happy to help clients connect with vocalists or producers I collaborate with off-platform.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. Because it gives me the freedom to collaborate across borders and deliver high-quality work quickly and efficiently.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I won’t deliver something that doesn’t feel honest or tailored. You’ll get a song that serves your beat, your brand, and your audience, not just filler lyrics.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Turning emotions and stories into something people can sing, remember, and feel connected to.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: Can you write in my genre even if it’s not Afro-based? A: Absolutely. As long as I have a reference or vibe to connect to, I can write across genres.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That writing is just rhyming words to a beat. A strong song carries weight, structure, emotion, intention, and that takes more than just clever lines.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: - What’s the message or mood you want to get across? - Who’s your audience? - Do you want this to sound more emotional, commercial, or both? - Do you already have a reference song in mind?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear about the feeling and message you want to share because even a few words or a reference song helps a lot. The more honest you are upfront, the better I can tailor the song to you.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: - My phone (to record ideas) - A solar charger - A notebook + pen - Headphones - A bluetooth speaker for reference playback

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started writing songs young, but began doing it professionally as I realized how much potential lies in songwriting—especially for global markets. I’ve been building my catalog and client base while staying rooted in creative growth.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Melodic, heartfelt, sometimes clever, always intentional. My writing moves between catchy hooks and emotional storytelling.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Tems. Her tone is pure emotion, and I’d love to write something that brings out both her power and vulnerability.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Let the lyrics breathe, don’t overstuff the verse. Emotion hits harder when it has space to land.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Afro-fusion, Amapiano, Trap, Hip Hop, R&B, but honestly, I adapt to anything with a good reference and a beat that speaks. Genre doesn’t limit me; emotion and message lead.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Telling a story that sounds like a song. I can take a concept, raw or vague, and shape it into something that makes people feel something from the first line to the last chorus.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotional depth, structure, and a melody that’s easy to remember. I write with purpose, every line should mean something. Whether it’s introspective or hype, I make sure the song feels.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The artist sends me their beat and a concept or mood. I dive into the instrumental, sketching a melody and writing lyrics that tell a story, fit the structure, and serve the artist's voice. Then I send formatted lyrics and a scratch vocal demo to guide delivery.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I currently operate lean—writing and recording scratch demos with basic gear. Most of my focus is on the writing itself. For finalized demos, I collaborate with trusted producers and vocalists to get the right sound.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists who blend vulnerability and groove, like Burna Boy, Tayc, or J. Cole. Writers like Neo, Simi, or Stromae who treat lyrics as storytelling art really push me creatively.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is full song creation, writing both lyrics and topline melodies tailored to the client’s beat, theme, and vocal style. I often receive an instrumental and a general idea (or emotion), and I craft a structured, story-driven song around it, complete with a hook, verses, and sometimes a bridge. Whether it's a love song, a personal confession, or something catchy and commercial, I focus on emotional connection, lyrical clarity, and melody that fits the vibe and purpose of the track.
