Interview with Luciano Castillo

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Age or certifications does not mean experience. With no option of getting a certification, I had to learn all I needed with the resources I had. I created the experience by being in the studio everyday and learning the ins and outs through professional relationships with respected downtown producers as well as research into digital and analog. But research all the time, nothing beats being in the studio and learning hands on not just the gear, but the different people along the way.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Establish a relationship that can last a lifetime & make music that breaks barriers! Let’s create the next wave.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Solar Power generator with built in extension cords & outlets, our ADAM Audio A7X Monitors with cables, MacBook Pro 16’ M4 Maxed out lol, Apollo Twin X interface, Sure SM7B Mic with cloud lifter & multiple cords. If I could choose a 6 it would be the homies, wifeys & liquor to jam out.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Travis Scott & Tame Impala, because I feel their music is cutting edge and they aren't afraid of pushing musical boundaries. Weeknd, Pharrell, Yeat & Frank Ocean are also artist who did the same that I fw.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Depending on the Level, continue producing even if learning the daw, effects and engineering sounds hurts or takes so much time. One day you'll open a project, an instrument and make a banger with no overthinking, just flowing and it'll be something new and dope. Then you'll open another project right after, do the same thing and become addicted. Keeping it simple or expansive are all constructs, make what you LOVE. I love minimal and expensive or both variations from minimal Playboi Carti to expensive Tame Impala. What really worked on the Mixing side was compare and contrasting the EQ & LUFS meter from the artists in each genre to my mix; I use this depending on the goal in mind.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Hip-Hop, Trap, Pop, Rock, Indie, Psychedelic, Latin, EDM, or all in between.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I speak with the artist and gauge their vision & sound direction, then I get to work. Final creation ends up transcending expectations, breaking barriers, booming the stage, vibing in stores, cars, streets, or everything in between.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: Versatile Analog-Digital Approach, I want to keep warm and raw sounds when needed while being able to excel in precision. I also love playing with my analog chain, effect pedals and amps that I can't get anywhere else. I use Logic Pro X as a daw, our studio has skilled guitar players ready to work. I also play the drums pretty well and have had that skill for as long as I've been producing. When it comes to what the artist needs, I like to stay flexible. 17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Being a fully hands on artist when it comes to all production of my personal music, I give my first inspiration to Kevin Parker, who I'd love to work with as well as Prince, Travis Scott and Kanye West. I love Rick Rubens Multi-Genre approach because it leaves his "Identity" out of the picture for the focus of the music, this is how he can produce Boom-Bap, Trap, to Metal or Pop. Then for those who established their specific sound/Identity that transcended the norm, I really credit Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Early Kanye, Madlib, J.Dilla, Pharrell, Pierre Borne, Metro Boomin' as well as BNYX.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Music Production is the most common, however I do like mixing while I produce to hit a sweat spot or create an effect that take the vibe closer to the vision. I sometimes do this so that workflow and ideas are not lost in creation.
