Interview with Jayytimothy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m particularly proud of was a collaboration with an Hip-Hop artist Duo. They came to me with a raw, emotional track that needed a lot of work. After mixing, the track turned into something truly special—radio-ready and with a professional, polished sound. It was an honor to bring their vision to life. Seeing the excitement of how they seen the track elevate.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I’m mixing a new hip-hop tracks for an indie artist, along with several pop singles. I’m also working on some new content for my own mixing tutorials and an upcoming eBook.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: n/a
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer digital tools for precision and flexibility
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to treat every track with the same level of care and dedication, no matter how big or small the project. I’m committed to delivering a mix that sounds professional, suits your vision, and is ready for the world to hear.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to bring an artist's vision to life and helping their music reach its fullest potential. There’s something incredibly rewarding about hearing a raw track evolve into something that sounds polished and professional. I also love enhancing my sonic ability.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Question: "How long will it take to mix and master my song?" Answer: It depends on the complexity of the track, but generally, a full mix and master can take anywhere from 1-5 days. I always aim to get your track back as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality. Question: "Can you help me with vocal tuning?" Answer: Yes, I offer vocal tuning and can adjust timing, pitch, and more to ensure your vocals are perfect for the track.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that mixing is just about balancing levels. In reality, mixing is a creative process where you have to make artistic decisions, craft space in the sound, and enhance emotional impact. It’s more than just EQ and volume—it’s about shaping a track to make it feel right and ensuring it communicates the right message to the listener.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What genre is your track, and what kind of vibe are you aiming for? Are there any reference songs you want your track to sound like? Do you have any specific elements in the song that you want to emphasize or downplay? What’s your timeline for the project? Do you need additional services (e.g., vocal tuning, sound design, custom effects)?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to your potential provider’s previous work to get a sense of their style and approach. Every engineer has a different method and sound. If you like what you hear, make sure to communicate clearly about your vision for the track so that we can collaborate effectively. Be open to suggestions, but also stay true to your artistic direction.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: aptop – Essential for running my DAW and handling all my mixing and production tasks. Microphone – To record any ideas, vocals, or sounds I need to work with. Power Source – Can’t work without power! A reliable power source to keep everything running. WiFi – Access to the internet for collaboration, research, and staying connected with clients. Trackball Mouse – I prefer the smooth control and precision of a trackball mouse for fine editing work.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started in music as a hobbyist, learning how to record music on my own. After realizing my passion for mixing, I dove deeper into the technical side of things, studying audio engineering and experimenting with different software and techniques. I've been working professionally as an audio engineer and producer for over 2 years, offering remote mixing and mastering services.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’m not afraid to get creative with effects, but I always keep the track’s core intact.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with any artist or producer who is genuinely creative and willing to push boundaries in their music. I’m inspired by those who are always experimenting, finding new sounds, and aren’t afraid to take risks. Whether it’s an emerging indie artist or an established pop-rock producer, I believe that true creativity shines through when artists are willing to break the mold and explore new possibilities in their sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: You’ll be surprised how many elements in your track disappear or sound muddy when played back in mono
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work with hip-hop, R&B, and pop artists, but I’m open to a wide range of genres. I’ve worked on everything from indie rock , and I love how every genre requires different techniques.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is applying my brain.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a balance of professionalism, attention to detail, and creative insight. My goal is to enhance the track while staying true to the artist’s vision. I aim to make every song sound radio-ready, ensuring clarity, punch, and balance, whether it’s a subtle pop song or an aggressive rap track. I also love using my mixing style to make every track stand out with unique textures and space.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I receive a track, my first step is to listen through it to identify key areas that need attention—be it balance, EQ, or effects. I start by cleaning up any unwanted noise and ensuring all elements sit well together in the mix. After that, I’ll move on to adjusting levels, panning, and applying EQ and compression to give the track depth. I always aim to maintain the original energy of the song while enhancing the overall sound. The final step is mastering to give the track that commercial, polished feel.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is centered around flexibility and precision. I work in a home studio with a scarlet audio interface, monitors, and use Reaper for most of my mixing and mastering work. I also have access to a wide range of plugin suites like Waves, and iZotope. My DAW is optimized for speed and accuracy, allowing me to work on multiple tracks simultaneously while maintaining the highest quality.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by Michael Jackson for his groundbreaking approach to performance and production, and Bruce Swedien, his legendary engineer, whose attention to detail and mixing expertise made MJ’s sound timeless. I also draw inspiration from producers of pop rock music, who know how to craft infectious hooks while balancing the energy of the song with clarity and punch. Their ability to fuse catchy melodies with raw emotion influences the way I approach every mix.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily focus on mixing and mastering services for artists and producers across a variety of genres. This includes balancing tracks, cleaning up vocals, adjusting levels, EQ, and applying effects to make sure everything sounds polished and ready for release. I also offer custom audio editing, whether it's removing noise, adding effects, or improving overall sound quality.
