Interview with Alex Myers
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both analog and digital have their strengths, and I believe in using the best of both worlds. Analog adds warmth, depth, and character, while digital offers precision, flexibility, and efficiency. Combining the two allows me to create a mix that’s both sonically rich and polished to perfection.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to treat your music with the same care and dedication as my own. I’ll work tirelessly to bring out the best in your song, ensuring it sounds polished, impactful, and true to your vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the deep connection I have with music and its power to move people. Being able to shape songs and help artists create something meaningful is an amazing way to share that love and impact with others
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Common Question: How long will it take to mix my song? Answer: “The turnaround time depends on the complexity of the project, but I typically deliver within 1-3 days. I’ll keep you updated throughout the process to ensure we meet your timeline.” Common Question: Can you make my song sound like [Nickelback]? Answer: “While I can use reference tracks to guide the mix and achieve a similar vibe, I always focus on enhancing your unique sound to make your music stand out.” Common Question: Do you offer revisions? Answer: “Yes, I include [3] revisions to make sure the final mix matches your vision. Additional revisions are always available for a small fee.”
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that mixing is just about adjusting levels or adding effects. In reality, it’s a creative and technical process that involves shaping the emotion, dynamics, and energy of a song to make it truly impactful and cohesive. It’s not just making it sound good—it’s making it feel right
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What is the overall vibe or emotion you want for your song? 2. Do you have a reference track or demo to guide the direction? 3. Are there specific elements or instruments you want highlighted in the mix? 4. Do you prefer a polished sound or a more raw, live feel? 5. What’s your timeline and are there any deadlines I should be aware of? These questions help me tailor my work to match their artistic goals.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who genuinely understands your vision and takes the time to communicate with you. A great provider will focus on enhancing your unique sound, not just following a template. Always check their portfolio to ensure their work aligns with the style you’re aiming for, and don’t hesitate to ask questions about their process to make sure it’s a good fit
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mac, UAD interface, SM7B, MIDI keyboard, and a Neve 1073
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for a little over 6 years. Started out doing live sound and moved over to the studio world and now i do both for a living!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Daughtry because of their incredible talent for writing unforgettable hooks. Chris’s powerful voice, paired with the energy and skill of the band, creates such a dynamic and impactful sound. It would be amazing to collaborate with a group that consistently delivers rock anthems with so much heart and authenticity
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more! and always start with a clear vision of the song’s emotion and energy. Build your mix or production around that core feeling, ensuring every element supports the song’s story and impact!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Country, Hard Rock, Metal, Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skills are crafting dynamic, balanced mixes and bringing songs to life through thoughtful production. As a skilled songwriter, I excel at capturing emotion and storytelling, which enhances my ability to produce tracks that truly connect with listeners.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, balance, and impact, ensuring your song connects emotionally and leaves a lasting impression
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I’ll review your provided stems, demo, or reference track to get a clear sense of the sound you’re aiming for. From there, I organize and clean up the tracks, ensuring they’re ready for mixing. I focus on balancing levels, applying EQ, compression, and effects, and enhancing the overall dynamics of the song. Throughout the process, I keep communication open, sending drafts for feedback and making revisions as needed until you’re completely satisfied with the final mix
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am a Logic Pro X user with a Manley outboard compressor and lots of older Neve outboard gear, like my favorite piece, which is the master bus processor. For drums, I track a custom SJC drum kit with mainly all Earthworks mics, and for vocals, I use a Neumann TLM 103. And also have a collage of many different 100w tube guitar amps such as the Friedman BE100 and EVH Stealth head with friedman 4x12's.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Daughtry, Mammoth WVH, Vertical Horizion
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for my clients is mixing their tracks to achieve a professional, polished sound. I take their raw stems and balance the levels, enhance the clarity with EQ and compression, and add creative effects to bring out the emotion and energy of the song. Whether it’s vocals, instruments, or full productions, my goal is to ensure the mix aligns with their artistic vision and is ready for release.
