Transforming Tracks, Elevating Sound – Letting Your Music Shine.
Hey there! I’m Michael Shofi, a mix engineer with over seven years of experience, driven by a passion for crafting mixes that feel authentic and exciting. My work spans the genres of folk, indie, rock, and pop, and I’m dedicated to letting the heart of every song shine through.
I’ve been fortunate to study music production and mixing under Philip Weinrobe (Big Thief, Adrianne Lenker, Hand Habits), whose guidance has shaped my approach to audio. Collaborating with artists is my favorite part of the process—there’s nothing better than hearing new music and helping bring an artist's vision to life.
Whether you’re looking to polish a track or bring a full project to its final form, I’d love to work with you to create something unforgettable.

Interview with Shofi
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my production style as warm, spacious, and based in real human feeling. I’m drawn to organic textures like the sound of fingers on strings, breath before a note, room tone, tape sounds. Those little imperfections are the point. They’re what make a recording feel alive. Especially now, as AI plays a bigger and bigger role in music, I think the human fingerprint matters more than ever. The beauty of a song isn’t in how clean or flawless it is, it’s in the honest cracks. I try to create recordings where you can hear the person behind the sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My number one tip is to protect the thing that makes the song special. If you love the way it feels when it’s just you and a piano, don’t bury that under layers just because you can. Explore, experiment, have fun, but always hold onto the heart of the song and let it shine.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of a cozy second-bedroom studio in Astoria, NY. I recently updated the acoustic treatment, so the space feels warm, quiet, and focused. The room is filled with guitars, keyboards, and all sorts of funny sound-making gadgets. It’s the kind of space where you can pick something up and immediately stumble onto an idea.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m really influenced by producers like Philip Weinrobe, Brian Eno, and Andrew Sarlo. I’m constantly studying how they create space, texture, and emotional depth in recordings. And like a lot of musicians, The Beatles and George Martin are kind of my north star. Pink Floyd, Bon Iver, that whole lineage of music that’s lush, intentional, and deeply human.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am very lucky to work with incredible artists through all stages of production from writing to mixing/mastering. I most commonly will record artists' original music in my studio/other studios in New York City before mixing their songs in my professional, sound treated home studio. I love jumping in for any part of the process, though!
