Interview with Sanele Maphisa
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: With all the professional work I’ve done, funny enough, the projects I’m most proud of are the ones I worked on with a close friend. We’d just exchange ideas, collaborate creatively, and push boundaries without any restrictions. There’s something magical about that freedom—just letting the music take its own shape and not worrying about the usual constraints. It’s in those moments where I really feel the purest connection to the art and my role in bringing it to life.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: What am I working on right now? Well, I can’t technically disclose that info—trust me, I’d love to spill the beans, but the "mystery" is part of the fun. Let’s just say, it’s going to be great, and you’ll hear about it soon enough. Stay tuned!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, not yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I work primarily in the digital realm because it offers flexibility, efficiency, and an extensive range of tools that suit my workflow. Digital platforms allow me to experiment freely, and the convenience of working “in the box” means I can easily incorporate high-quality plugins, libraries, and effects that are industry standards. While I do appreciate the warmth and character that analog gear provides, it's also very expensive and not always practical for my current setup. That said, I’m always open to using both digital and analog depending on the project’s needs, but my priority is always delivering the best sound possible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to you is simple: I will work with you to create something that truly resonates, delivering high-quality work that matches your vision. Whether it’s music production, mixing, or composing, I’ll be dedicated to ensuring your project sounds the way you’ve always imagined. Communication is key, and I’ll be here every step of the way to make sure you’re satisfied with the final result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the emotion music and sound evoke, and how it resonates with me spiritually. Music has the power to move people, and being able to create that feeling—whether it’s through a song or a film composition—is incredibly fulfilling. There’s something special about contributing to the final piece of art, even if my work often stays in the background, enhancing the experience without being the main focus. You wouldn’t cry to your favorite song or feel the tension in a scary movie without the emotional power that music and sound bring to the table. That’s what makes my job so meaningful: helping others connect to those feelings and create memories that stay with them.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Although I haven’t worked with clients on SoundBetter just yet, I have extensive experience working with artists and producers in other settings. Clients often ask me about my turnaround time, revision policies, and what they can expect from the final product. My answer to that is: I’m committed to delivering quality work on time, with an open line of communication throughout the process. My goal is to make sure you’re fully satisfied with the result, and I’m always here to answer any questions or offer guidance as we work together.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that we’re not “real” producers or composers if we’re not formally trained or if we work entirely in the box (digitally). Some people believe that talent only comes from traditional music education or from using expensive, analog gear. But in reality, music production is about creativity, innovation, and understanding the tools you have at your disposal—whether that’s digital or analog. I’m self-taught, just like many others in the industry, and I’ve learned through consistent practice, study, and hands-on experience. Being able to adapt and work with the technology available today is just as valuable as any formal training. Oh! and of course, people think it's easy!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1) What’s the overall vibe or mood you're going for in your project? 2) Are there any specific artists, genres, or songs you’re inspired by? 3) What are your main goals for this track (e.g., radio play, film placement, personal use)? 4) Do you have a specific timeline or deadline in mind? 5) What’s your vision for the mix/master? Are there any particular elements you want to highlight? 6) Can you share any references, demo tracks, or previous work to help guide the sound? 7) Are there any particular instruments, sounds, or textures you’d like to include or avoid? 8) Do you have session files or stems ready, or will we need to work with something else? 9) What’s your preferred method of communication and feedback? 10) Is there anything unique about your project or personal preferences I should know?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to find someone whose style and approach resonate with your vision. It’s important to communicate openly about your goals and expectations. As a producer, I focus on creating something unique and personal for each project, so the more you share about what you're looking for, the better the result will be. Also, trust the process—good music takes time, and collaboration is key. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or provide feedback along the way. Working together, we can create something truly special.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island and could only take 5 pieces of gear, I’d definitely bring my laptop—that’s a must. I’d also take my phone (even though I’m not sure it technically counts as gear, it’s vital for my workflow and a much-needed break from the laptop). Next, I’d grab my headphones for mixing and listening, my mouse for precise control, and my MIDI keyboard to keep creating music. It’s all I need to stay connected, productive, and keep the creative flow going, even in isolation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in music for about 5 years, starting in 2018 with no equipment and just a desire to learn. I spent hours watching tutorials and studying on YouTube. Back in primary school, like everyone else, I tried my hand at rapping—probably not my best move, but hey, it was the norm, right? I quickly realized I’m probably better off behind the scenes. The next year, I fixed up an old home computer and started working with whatever I had—crappy earphones included. Through consistency and dedication, my skillset and knowledge grew each year. I’ve worked with local artists, engineered and mixed at a local studio, and found a publisher, leading to sync licensing placements. I’m still learning, always pushing to get better.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a reflection of my deep connection to both emotional and cinematic music. I’ve always been drawn to music that stirs emotions, which is why you’ll often hear pianos, strings, and ambient textures in my work. These elements allow me to create rich, emotive soundscapes that resonate on a deeper level. On the other hand, I’m equally passionate about dark, menacing, and unsettling sounds. This side of my style is heavily influenced by my love for UK drill and trap, genres that bring that nocturnal, gritty vibe I find inspiring. The tension and intensity in these beats fuel my cinematic side, allowing me to craft music that is both atmospheric and raw.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists from my generation, as I believe there’s something special about collaborating with those who are still growing and experimenting with their sound. Honestly, I’m a bit afraid to work with my heroes—there’s a certain fear that comes with meeting someone whose work you’ve admired for so long. I truly believe in the saying, "Never meet your heroes," because sometimes the reality doesn’t live up to the expectation. The artists I idolize are at a different stage in their careers, from a different time, and I’m more focused on building with artists who are in the same phase of their journey. There’s a unique energy that comes with working alongside people who are creating music for today, and that’s where I find the most genuine connection and excitement.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tip 1: If your love for music isn't pure or genuine, then maybe it's time to stop and ask yourself—what are you really doing? Music is about passion, not just creating sound, and without that heart and soul, it’s just noise. Tip 2: There's a world full of information right at our fingertips. Some people get formal training, others spend tons of money on online courses, but the truth is, you won’t get anywhere unless you sit down and figure it out on your own. Practice, persistence, and self-learning are key—because the universe doesn’t owe you anything. You have to earn it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a diverse range of music, from custom beats in genres like hip-hop, RnB, trap, and pop, to film scores and soundtracks for TV shows, ads, and films. Hip-hop was my first love, so I have extensive experience in the hip-hop/trap scene, as these were the first types of projects I worked on. My versatility allows me to adapt to different styles, infusing each project with my passion and unique influences.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my versatility. Like Hans Zimmer (though sadly, without the Oscars—yet!), I'm self-taught and draw inspiration from a variety of genres. This allows me to adapt to any project and infuse my diverse influences with genuine passion, creating something truly unique every time.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is a combination of technical expertise, creative vision, and a deep love for music. Every track I work on is treated with the utmost care, as if it were my own. I strive to infuse each project with a sense of authenticity and emotion, ensuring the final product resonates with listeners. Whether it’s crafting a beat, mixing a track, or composing a cinematic score, I focus on bringing the client’s vision to life while adding my unique touch. I believe music is more than sound—it's an expression of feeling, and I pour my heart into every detail to make it meaningful and memorable. For me, music isn’t just a job; it’s a passion. It matters deeply to me, and I aim to reflect that love and dedication in every project I take on.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is tailored to the specific needs of each project, ensuring every client gets a unique and professional result. Initial Consultation: I start by discussing the client’s vision, style, and goals for the project. Whether it’s a beat, a full production, or a soundtrack, understanding the creative direction is key. Pre-Production: I review any references, session files, or creative notes provided by the client. For custom work, I may sketch out ideas or rough drafts to align with their expectations before diving into the production phase. Production & Sound Design: Using industry-standard tools and techniques, I craft the music or mix to fit the project’s vibe. This includes creating custom sounds, layering elements, and ensuring a cohesive, polished result. Feedback & Revisions: I deliver the project for review and collaborate with the client to make revisions as needed. My goal is to ensure the final product exceeds their expectations. Final Delivery: After incorporating feedback, I provide the final files in the required format, ready for release or integration into the client’s project. Throughout the process, I keep communication open and ensure a smooth, professional workflow. My aim is to bring the client’s vision to life while making the experience enjoyable and stress-free.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is a hybrid environment that blends cutting-edge digital tools with a modern workflow designed for efficiency and creativity. I’ve transitioned from traditional analog setups to a fully digital workspace to keep up with evolving industry standards and trends. I work with industry-standard DAWs, including FL Studio, alongside top-tier plugins like Kontakt libraries, FabFilter Pro-Q3, and legendary mixing tools such as the LA-2A compressor and SSL channel strips. These tools allow me to craft professional-quality productions, mixes, and masters across genres like hip-hop, RnB, trap, and pop. While my focus is on digital production, my monitoring and signal chain ensure pristine sound accuracy, providing clients with the polished results they expect. My workflow is entirely client-focused, offering a flexible and collaborative approach to every project.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by a wide range of musicians and producers who’ve pushed the boundaries of creativity and technical excellence. Kanye West, Logic, Mike Dean, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, just to name a few in the hip hop scene. Additionally, composers like Hans Zimmer and Ludwig Goransson inspire me a lot as well.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: For artists, I often produce beats and full tracks in genres like hip-hop, RnB, trap, and pop, tailoring the sound to match their unique style and vision. For filmmakers and content creators, I specialize in composing soundtracks and cinematic scores that enhance the storytelling of their projects. Additionally, I provide mixing and mastering services, ensuring that every project achieves a polished, industry-standard quality that translates well across all platforms and mediums. My process always includes collaboration with the client to ensure the final result matches their creative goals.
