Interview with Andrew Espartero
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Last year I mixed and mastered a cover for an artist in Columbus Ohio. It was especially fun because it was for a music video and I was also really proud of how the mix turned out.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently co-producing a couple songs with another lofi artist.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Having used both analog and digital, I have been really impressed by how digital plugins have been sounding. I also prefer the ability to make quick changes and the convenience of digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver. And we will keep working until we get the project as good as we can make it. My goal is to be proud of the work I completed.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating music that makes people feel something. And I love collaborating with other artist to make amazing music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I generally ask what music or artist inspire them, or what music or artist inspired this track. I also typically ask what emotions they want their song to convey or how they want the listener of their song to feel.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook pro, focusrite audio interface, SM7B, Taylor 224ce-k dlx, Nord Stage piano
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been playing piano since I was in middle school and been producing since I was in high school. Right out of high school and during college I interned at a church doing live and studio mixing. After that I started working with a talent agency as a keys/piano player and continued producing and mixing tracks for friends and other artist I got connected with for free. Ever since then I've continued to learn and improve my skills and just recently started freelancing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as pretty general but I like music with a mix of pop and hip hop elements.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One tip I have for music production or any job someone does, music related or not, is have fun and enjoy what you are doing!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop, lofi instrumental and CCM.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is connecting with other artist and understanding and delivering on their goals and needs.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring experience and musicality. Weather is mixing, producing or session playing I'll always bring emotion, feel, and dynamics to any song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically like to review references or demos for production or session playing and stems for mixing. Then I will have a conversation with you about your goals for the song. I then get to work on the project then after, send it back to you for review and discuss possible revisions. Any conversation following our initial conversation is usually via email.
