Interview with Mark Furst

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: The creative dialogue. Every project is a chance to connect with someone else’s vision and help bring it to life with sound. I also enjoy solving problems, whether it’s a mix that needs clarification or a piece that requires emotional depth.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I work across a range of styles, including cinematic electronic, art industrial, ambient, and experimental hybrid genres. Many of my projects are designed with visual media in mind, but I’ve also produced and mixed contemporary classical, singer-songwriter, jazz-inflected pieces, and progressive rock. My focus is on creating emotionally resonant work, whether for sync, standalone listening, or collaborative performance.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: My ability to bridge creative and technical domains. I bring decades of experience in audio production, a graduate degree from Berklee in Interdisciplinary Music Studies, and a deep understanding of post-production workflows, allowing me to approach projects holistically.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: A sense of atmosphere, clarity, and storytelling. Whether I’m mixing or composing, my goal is to create space where every sound has purpose and supports the emotional arc. I focus on sonic depth and balance while staying true to the artist’s vision.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I start by listening carefully to the client’s goals and materials. From there, I develop a roadmap, whether for mixing, composing, or post, that aligns with the project’s emotional and sonic intent. Communication is key throughout, and I share progress in stages for collaborative feedback.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: My main workspace is a project studio equipped for full-cycle music and post-production. I use a hybrid setup across Cubase, Nuendo, Bitwig, and Pro Tools, with a curated collection of synths spanning from the 1970s to the present day. The studio supports recording, mixing, sound design, and voiceover work, and is optimized for both in-person and remote collaboration.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I work across music production, mixing, and audio post. Recent projects include engineering and mixing for a progressive rock band, supporting both their live sound and upcoming studio recordings. I have also worked with a community orchestra and completed original compositions for short-form media. My studio setup allows for both in-person and remote collaboration. While I am comfortable in a variety of genres, I tend to focus on cinematic, electronic, and experimental textures. Every project is shaped by the client's needs, with an emphasis on clarity, emotional resonance, and a polished final result.
