Interview with ANDRÆ
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Give me 3 artists and/or 3 songs as references.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: To have an extensive conversation about what you'd like to achieve and what your influences are.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Grand piano. Laptop. Microphone. Plug-in Keyboard. Headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing piano for 20+ years, singing and songwriting for 15+ years and producing songs for 10+ years. I sung on national television for a while ten years ago. I was signed by a record label in 2017 but decided to do my own thing after a year. I have produced songs for a few artists, but mainly I've been working on my personal music project "ANDRÆ" and promoting it myself.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My personal music projects are a mix of alternative electronic pop and dark alternative R&B. I tend to try merging different styles together in order to create something unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: James Blake is probably my biggest influence when it comes to making music. I'd love to work with him someday. Flume comes pretty close too.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's all about balance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I don't restrict myself to one style, but I do a lot of alternative pop, electronic, R&B, experimental, synth-pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I can come up with a lot of melodies quite easily.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my unsual way of looking at things, my creativity and imagination. I've been doing music, fine arts, architecture and design for most of my life and use everything influence and inspirations into my craft.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For songwriting, I love to just improvise humming melodies on the piano and then develop them, put words on them. For production, I just love to experiment with lots of different sounds and instruments until I find some interesting patterns and textures that I can develop and adapt to a particular song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have my own home studio, with a few microphones, keyboards, and I have been recording and producing with Logic Pro for over 10 years.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: James Blake, Billie Eilish, Grimes, Banks, Flume, Chet Faker, Tame Impala, The Weeknd, NAO, Lauryn Hill, Frank Ocean, 80s Pop, The Knife, Daft Punk, Little Dragon, Bjork, The xx, Jamie xx, ...
