Interview with DrewReaL
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: When my friends launched their pop culture podcast, I was excited to jump in and help edit the audio, ensuring their episodes sounded polished and professional.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a personal project that has 8 songs, and I just got hired to make a short song about convincing the English to call futbol soccer.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I know no one on soundbetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I work digitally because it’s more convenient for me right now, but I still appreciate the warm, natural tone of analog. That said, I’m drawn to the versatility and clarity of a modern sound, so I prefer digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is. You will hear all the improvements.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love getting lost in the sound. I love hearing the final version then going back to hear its raw form. I really do enjoy this work.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers asks questions like what my standard mix includes, I explain it covers all the essential elements for a professional sound. This includes compression to control dynamics, EQ to shape the tone, time-based effects like reverb and delay for depth and space, tuning for pitch accuracy, and leveling to ensure everything is balanced and cohesive. These steps work together to create a polished and industry-ready mix.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people may not realize the time and precision required to create a high-quality mix. It’s a detailed process that involves careful adjustments, balancing, and fine-tuning to ensure the final product meets professional standards.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your ultimate vision for this project, and are there any specific references or examples you'd like me to draw inspiration from?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: It’s important to consider experience, attention to detail, and communication. With over a decade of mixing, mastering, and sound design experience, my work has reached over 264,000 streams, showcasing my ability to handle diverse projects. I pride myself on being detail-oriented, carefully analyzing and refining every element to align perfectly with your vision. Collaboration is key, and I make it a priority to maintain open communication and offer up to two revisions to ensure you’re completely satisfied. While hip-hop is my foundation, I also work with pop and country, as well as sound design for games and media, making me versatile and adaptable. Above all, I’m passionate about my craft and treat every project with the care and commitment needed to deliver exceptional results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook pro, a condenser microphone, headphones and an interface, also add a Zoom H5 in there. I will be capturing all the sounds in that deserted island loading up my sound library.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music has always been my passion, but for a long time, I wasn’t sure how to turn it into a career. It started as a side project until I educated myself and discovered other ways to contribute, like mixing and mastering—a craft I’ve been perfecting for over 10 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: my style is laid back. Even with the music I make. Its chill vibes, almost like lofi, but I like the drums to hit harder.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jelly Roll is my go to now. His lyrics speak to me and the music is flawless. It'll be a dream to be in one of those studio sessions and add my sauce to the pot.
