Interview with Zackery Wilson Elliott
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: This EP recording has been a journey up highs and lows and I'm just proud of myself for hanging in there and seeing it through. This is some of my best work. (I wear all the hats).
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A 3-song solo EP and writing for a new duo project.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I worked with Max Helgmo in the past, great guy and good at what he does.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital analog emulation is the budget friendly answer.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That we'll make something you're proud of and are excited to share.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Solving problems, songs are like puzzles and I only grow fonder of puzzles with age.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you do podcast intros? Yes, I do. Why are your rates so high? I have bills to pay, my time is valuable. For perspective, it takes me anywhere from 10-24 hours of continuous work to fully produce one song. My rate for the production of one song on SoundBetter is what I normally charge for one hour of live performance.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That any ability I have is talent I was born with. There was a time when I sucked, at everything, and my abilities as they present now are a result of work I've put in.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What feelings are you trying to evoke with your song?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to be as clear as you can with what you're looking for and your goals.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic guitar, Harmonica(s) and crutch, my trumpet (been meaning to get back into it), a mandolin.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I graduated university with a biology degree after 4 years of playing collegiate soccer, decided that music and snowboarding were more fun, and I've been a gigging musician and producer since 2020.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Space Folk, songs that start off small and intimate that get magnified.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Gregory Alan Isakov will always be on my list, other than him maybe Leonard Cohen, but that might be tough.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: No amount of production or mixing can take the place of a good performance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Acoustic/Indie/Folk
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my own approach to song creation and taste that I've cultivated as a listener and professional musician.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I'm sitting down to record a song I've already written, I map out the sections and create arrangement markers in my DAW, making note of any tempo changes and programming those in. Then I'll do a live scratch take to a click. From there I get into the multitracking of different parts, producing and roughly mixing as I go.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently track and produce out of my home studio, I take tracks to EPL studios here in Edmonton to mix on Yamaha HS7s.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Gregory Alan Isakov's marriage of the quintessential folk with modern day production taste will always be my north star. Sometimes I call it 'space folk'.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly I provide backing vocals and acoustic guitar for clients, although I have done everything from songwriting to full production.
