GEMMA on SoundBetter

Female vocalist and topliner who helps bring your vision to life!

I'm Gemma, a singer-songwriter based in the Netherlands, often traveling to London for music. I'm mostly focused on my own artist project but I love writing for other artists and collaborating as a vocalist or top liner. My main genre is pop, but I also have experience with dance, r&b and soul. I would love to help bring your next project to life!

Interview with GEMMA

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I would love to work with RAYE. She is the epitome of what I think an artist should be.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I think I have a good ability to pin point what the strength of a song should be. I'm not scared to be vulnerable and always thrive to make a song the best it can be. I think it's important to keep the commercial side of music in mind but I don't think it should have a place in a creative process. The music and authenticity comes first and then the right audience will follow.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: It depends on the project but I always put the music first. As a writer for someone else or even as a vocalist it is very important to leave your ego at the door. I love helping other people bring their vision to life and find it very fruitful to really listen to what the artist/producer wants. I think collaborating is what makes music so special. So I'd say listen first en then let the creativity take the lead.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I have a pretty good studio stetup. My brother is an enterior builder and made the room almost soundproof. I also use a Manley microphone which has been a great investment to record vocals properly.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: My all time favorite artist is RAYE. I love her approach to music and how she doesn't bound herself by one genre. Julia Michaels is a huge songwriting inspiration for me. I love her Nashville style lyricism and her refreshing melodies. I love how you can often tell that she's worked on a song without having looked at the credits.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I often do vocals or toplines for Chill House, EDM or techno producers. I'm also frequently in sessions as a songwriter for other artists.
