Interview with Dylan Wissing
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I started out as a baby banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons, which follows the family tradition – my great-grandfather was a drummer and songwriter in the circus and vaudeville, way back in the day. The music that was around me as a child had a big impact, and set me on the path I’m on today – Hendrix, Stones, Ohio Players, Otis Redding, Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Sun Ra, Beatles, Pharaoh Sanders, EWF. I still have the old family vinyl, scratched and scribbled on.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm a very song-oriented drummer, and generally subscribe to the "less is more" approach unless the music calls for something different. The most important thing for me is that the song and the band sound great. Whether that means I play two notes for the whole track, or am building up a massive wall of drums and percussion, the song is the star of the show for me.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide drum and percussion tracks to clients from my own recording studio. The process is the same whether it's a mellow Americana song or a single measure loop for a hard-hitting Hip Hop track - find the right sounds from my extensive collection of instruments, record them to capture the unique sounds that each production needs, and play the right parts to bring the song to life.
