Interview with Giann Cortes
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: One of the most common questions I receive is whether I allow revisions. I offer up to 5 revisions as part of my service. After that, additional revisions can be arranged for a fee, ensuring that you get the exact sound you’re looking for without any added stress.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project that stands out is the song "INFERNO" by Sailing Before the Wind. I featured on the song with a guitar solo, and it turned out to be one of my favorite pieces of work. It does a good job at showcasing my technical and compositional abilities.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently finishing up my band's new album. In addition to that, I’m working on a new project that explores more of my technical ability.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My primary focus is technical metal, but I’m versatile and skilled in a wide range of genres and fully able to adapt my style to the needs of the project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill lies in both guitar playing and composition. I pride myself on creating intricate yet accessible parts that serve the song and elevate the overall experience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin by understanding your vision for the song. I ask for 2-5 reference tracks that capture the mood and sound you're aiming for. If I’m tracking guitar, I will jam along to your track multiple times to get a feel for the right approach before recording. This ensures that every part I play complements the track perfectly.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work revolves around session guitar work, ranging from lead solos and melodic guitar parts to rhythm playing. I also frequently produce full instrumentals. Typically, I complete all projects within 2-3 days to maintain a fast turnaround time.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My best advice is to come prepared with a clear vision of what you want your song to sound like. Having reference tracks helps me understand the direction and style you’re aiming for, allowing me to deliver exactly what you need.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is fast and smooth, with a focus on precision and emotion. However, I tailor my playing to what the song requires, ensuring that each track serves the overall vision.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A good recording is the foundation of a great mix. The better the source material, the easier it is to achieve a professional-sounding final product.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: If my work doesn’t meet your expectations, I offer a full refund. I stand behind my ability to deliver quality and will work with you until you’re completely satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The reaction I get from clients when they hear the final product. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work has helped them create something they’re proud of.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A common misconception is that I provide mixing and mastering services, which I do not. I focus solely on session guitar work and production. However, I’m happy to collaborate with other professionals to ensure the final track sounds amazing.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Ibanez RGDMS8, a laptop, my UAD Apollo, an instrument cable, and my studio headphones.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is optimized for both performance and production. I run Reaper on a Windows desktop, using a Universal Audio Apollo Solo Heritage Edition Audio Interface. I monitor through Yamaha HS8s and Kali LP6s, and I have a wide range of gear and plugins to suit any style. I use an Ibanez RGDMS8 and Ibanez RGT1220PB, along with several amp sims like Mixwave Jason Richardson and Archetype Nolly, and drum packs from Get Good Drums. My setup also includes a comprehensive library of plugins for bass, synths, and impact sounds, ensuring that I can handle any project that comes my way.
