Interview with Alexandre Maciel
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently worked on a project with an emerging artist who wanted to create a heartfelt acoustic EP. I was the producer and guitarist, responsible for arranging the songs, recording guitar tracks, and overseeing the mixing process. What I’m most proud of is how we captured the raw emotion and storytelling in each song. Collaborating closely with the artist allowed us to infuse their personal experiences into the music, creating a deeply authentic sound. Seeing the final product resonate with listeners has been incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my passion for music production
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I'm working on several projects, including producing new tracks for various artists and refining my own music compositions. I'm also focusing on expanding my portfolio by experimenting with different genres and collaborating with musicians to create unique sounds. It's an exciting time for creativity and exploration!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No! I don't know many people on the platform.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I appreciate both analog and digital methods, but I lean towards digital for its flexibility and efficiency. Digital recording allows for precise editing, easy manipulation of tracks, and the ability to access a wide range of virtual instruments and effects. However, I also value the warmth and character that analog equipment can bring to recordings. Ideally, I like to combine the best of both worlds, using digital tools to enhance the organic sound of analog when possible
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver high-quality, authentic music that truly reflects their vision and emotional intent. I commit to clear communication throughout the process, ensuring that their ideas are heard and incorporated. Ultimately, I aim to create a collaborative environment where we can achieve a polished final product that both of us are proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my work is the opportunity to collaborate with diverse artists and help bring their musical visions to life. Each project is unique, allowing me to explore different styles and creative ideas. I find immense joy in the process of creating music that resonates with people, knowing that I’m contributing to something meaningful and impactful
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often ask: How long will it take to complete my project? I usually respond that the timeline depends on the project's complexity, but I strive to provide a clear schedule and keep them updated throughout the process. What do you need from me to get started? I explain that I need their vision, any reference tracks, and details about their preferences regarding sound and instrumentation to ensure we're aligned. Can you work within my budget? I always try to be flexible and discuss options that fit their budget while maintaining quality. Open communication about finances helps us find a solution together. How involved will I be in the process? I encourage clients to be as involved as they want, whether that means providing feedback on drafts or just letting me take the lead. Collaboration is key for a successful outcome. These questions help establish a strong foundation for our working relationship.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that producing music is just about recording sounds. In reality, it involves a deep understanding of arrangement, mixing, and the emotional storytelling behind each track. Many people don’t realize how much creative input and technical skill go into crafting a polished final product that truly resonates with listeners
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When speaking with potential clients, I typically ask the following questions: What is your vision for this project, and what specific sound or emotion are you aiming to achieve? Do you have any reference tracks or artists that inspire the style you want? What is your timeline for completion, and are there any specific deadlines? What is your budget for this project? Are there any particular elements or instruments you want to include in the arrangement? These questions help me understand their goals and ensure we’re on the same page from the beginning
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would advise clients to clearly communicate their vision and expectations from the start. Providing references or examples of what they love can help align our creative processes. Additionally, being open to collaboration and feedback during the project will lead to a more satisfying and impactful final product. Trusting the process and maintaining clear communication are key to achieving the best result
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a deserted island and could only bring five pieces of equipment, I would choose: a notebook, an acoustic guitar, a MIDI controller, an audio interface, and a pair of headphones. That’s all I need to create and produce music!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My professional journey began over five years ago when I started recording and producing music in my home studio. Initially focused on acoustic guitar, I honed my skills in various styles, including folk and fingerstyle. Over the years, I’ve collaborated with diverse artists, expanding my expertise in music production and arrangement, and I’m passionate about continuously evolving as a musician.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as a fusion of acoustic warmth and modern production techniques. I focus on creating rich, textured soundscapes that blend folk and fingerstyle elements with contemporary influences. My approach emphasizes emotional storytelling through music, aiming to connect deeply with listeners while maintaining an authentic sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Mateus Asato!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: be yourself!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Folk, Gospel, Worship, Pop, Rock etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is blending technical precision with emotional depth, especially in acoustic guitar and production. I have a keen ear for detail, ensuring each note and layer adds value to the track, while maintaining the song's natural feel and energy. This balance helps me deliver high-quality, impactful music
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a deep sense of musicality and emotion to every track, with a focus on capturing the song’s unique essence. My guitar work adds warmth and authenticity, while my production skills ensure each element complements the overall sound. I aim to elevate the music, creating an experience that resonates with listeners
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process starts with understanding the client’s vision and musical goals. I then create a detailed arrangement, focusing on capturing the right tone and emotion. For guitar tracks, I record multiple takes to ensure quality and depth. Finally, I mix and refine the sound, keeping close communication throughout to ensure the final result aligns with the client’s expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run a professional home studio equipped with high-quality recording gear, including industry-standard microphones, audio interfaces, and DAWs. My setup is designed for capturing the natural tones of acoustic instruments, especially guitar, and allows me to mix and master tracks with precision for a polished, professional sound
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by musicians and producers like Tommy Emmanuel for his mastery of fingerstyle guitar, Quincy Jones for his timeless production skills, and Rick Rubin for his ability to capture raw emotion in music. Their dedication to authenticity and innovation continually influences my approach to creating music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
